Carl Desouza, from the Centre for Low Emissions Construction (CLEC) - part of the Environmental Research Group (ERG) at Imperial College London - explains how significant air pollution from the construction industry can be monitored and mitigations put in place.
The construction industry contributes around 1/3 of greenhouse gasses across the globe, from machinery and equipment through to transportation, materials and production. In cities and urban areas, the emissions and particulate matter - notably PM2.5 and PM10 - are significant factors in poor air quality leading to respiratory conditions and life-limiting illnesses, something that governments around the world are keen to address.
