PCV Systems - How They Work

If that's how a PCV designed and created, its job is simple, open & close for air in/out, how can it be worn out and needed to be replace? Is there something else missing?

Great Video! So, I got a 2013 chevy cruze ls, 1.8l engine. I suspect a pcv valve fault, but they put the darn thing in the valve cover! Its not hard to change, but its a silly diaphragm design and it will just fail again. Can I just put an inline pcv valve before the existing torn open valve?

nice video , i age a 73 Charger with a big block i noticed lately that i have oil dripping from the filter cap on my valve cover , i have a pcv valve that is connected to my carb spacer hole on the other valve cover and i recently changed the rear main seal for dripping oi badly , my question is does the filter cap ( after market chrome cap ) on the valve cover needs to be connected to my aftermarket air filter , and does it matter on which side (left or right of the engine ) the pcv valve is connected thanks

Thanks! I am replacing the PCV valve in my Nissan tomorrow, the air filter was filthy and a bit oily. Hopefully this fixes it. 2 minute fix on the 2.0 Nissan motor.

Can a bad pcv cause oil burning?

You should include the membrane type because those are very often destroyed by the oil over time ! also
they are very often built inside the vent cover

On another note clogged Pcv valve really damages gdi engines by allowing sludge oil to build up into the intake side of the intake valves causing all sorts of problems

Here’s my question.
I had a 383 stroker built and my vacuum isn’t as high as stock anymore.
At idle I’m now at 15 to 16 inch’s of manifold vacuum.
So how much vacuum is needed to operate a stock PCV valve?

Also what's important to note...the pcv valve hose always goes to manifold vacuum and the opposite side of the system goes to pre vacuum (air cleaner) before throttle body or carb. I've seen people do it wrong.

Pvc lines goes into the intake? I have mine going into carb vacum. Sbc 350. Or is this for newer vehicles with MAF sensor

I've been around cars for decades, and I'm quite familiar with how the basic systems work, but every once in a while, I like to watch an explanation video just to see how well somebody does presenting the info. This was superb, clear, concise, simple for anyone to follow👍

Gotta say, this is the best damn explanation ive ever had the chance to be present for. No room for misinterpretaton whatsoever. I even had the spring actuation behavior straight nackwards in my mind for awhile now, thinking that vacuum was acting in the complete opposite direction. No wonder i was confused. Our Toyota Rav 4 is going through a lot of oil. We were told that it’s the pcv valve. Could this be true?
Also. Genius Toyota has put the inexpensive valve under the intake. 500 dollar job. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.

If you left out the oil dipstick would that not relieve the pressure build up in the crankcase?

I remember my 55 Chevy 265 V8 with the crankcase draft tube facing the ground to vent the hydrocarbon gasses. It would stink in the Summer when it ran in traffic. My next newer mid-1960's car had the PCV system and did what it had to do as you had explained. But one thing that you did not mention was that with the PCV system the engine actually got better gas mileage as well as the cleaner air to breathe. Because the metered unburnt blowby hydrocarbons were reburned when sucked into the intake manifold along with the air fuel mixture for extra fuel efficiency.

Excellent explanation of the PCV valve. I am building a custom engine and have seen many variations on how to control crankcase pressure. I'm installing an EFI system and was thinking of going with venting to a can, but now I think the best way is to run it into the base of the throttle body. I don't want to run it in such a way as to add oil sludge at the intake valves. Great job, thanks!
