The US saves so much when it reduces its reliance on foreign oil. Saves the environment also. Which of course provides a positive impact on everyone’s health.

Your short sighted vision based on short sighted monetary returns are exactly the reason why western countries are always years and decades behind on our infrastructure needs. What you fail to understand is how infrastructure stimulates other development like decentralization of housing away from mega cities. Core issues like affordable housing, quality of life for people and access to labour for companies are solved by connecting regional cities with affordable housing to large cities with jobs.

These are idiotic arguments, as an Australian you should know that none of our Australian public transport systems are profitable, in which case by your own argument we should dismantle all of our public transport services. You should really try to spend your energy sorting out your own backyard before trying to comment on someone else's.

One important thing to understand is that not everything in a country should be for profit. Education, transportation, health care and housing should be affordable and available for everyone and it’s the responsibility of the government to make sure of that. That’s why we pay taxes

Most big infrastructure projects around the world are unprofitable. the real benefit is in the money spent in construction , operation...etc which creates many jobs and boost GDP

The mighty English engineers were going to build HS2 for 25 times the cost per mile than Chinese high rail. Now the UK conservative government has cancelled HS2 and is going backwards. The UK can’t waste money on maintenance because they did not build anything but pissed the money away.😂

"Pointing to China as the place that just gets things done isn't the best way to highlight how useless our governments are..."

Yea, except UK couldn't even manage to get 300km of HS2 completed. So even with all of China's problem taken into account, UK is still pretty freaking useless. A friend of mine told me that HS2 had already spaffed out a lot of money with land acquisitions in the North before that section of the line was pulled.

Meanwhile, I have travelled to Beijing from Hong Kong in 2019 and then recently did a 2500 km tour, covering cities like Wuhan, Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing.

I mean everyone can end up losing money but, my god, UK can't even get something to show for it.

Over the last thirty years, five of the G8 largest advanced economies have built high speed rail networks (Japan, Germany, France, Italy and Spain) and three have not (the USA, the UK and Canada). With one sole exception (Spain) the countries which built high speed rail networks have all grown more slowly than the ones which did not. Spain has indeed performed better than most of its peers, but it started from a lower base and remains by some margin the poorest country in the G8.There are of course many factors which affect a nation's economic performance, but it cannot be claimed that high speed rail is a prerequisite for prosperity.

How many bridges, buildings roads and other infrastructure has broken down ,fallen off or just collapsed in the first sign of wind ,water or earth quake?

Just because China slaps it in record time doesn't mean it safe or won't fall down 5 minutes later

The problem with Chinese High Speed Rail is that it’s cheaper and quicker to fly.

I live here and would much rather take HSR than fly or drive. However the HSR is always more expensive and slower than one of the other two options.

This is a video from a year ago, although I just saw it. I'm sorry to see so many people's messages from a year ago. Because many friends do not understand the situation of China's high-speed rail. In fact it has come close to a catastrophe. China Railway Corporation alone has 6 trillion in debt. In addition, local governments with high-speed railways in various places are also heavily in debt. Especially in today's economic downturn, it has become a heavy burden on local finances.
Let's put it this way, there are only three or four lines of high-speed rail that can make money in our country. Others, let alone selling them to others, even giving them away for free, I guess no one wants them. I am not exaggerating at all. Because no one can afford it.
