No such thing as a perfect histogram. I'm glad you said this. Depends on the type of shot you're going for. The typical representation of a "perfect" histogram is nonsense. Having said that, I almost never use my histogram. I have no exposure problems.

Thanks for this simple explanation -- avoid large spikes on the left or the right -- UNLESS the scene contains huge amounts of black or white so that it SHOULD contain spikes.

So the main point is avoiding clipping, touching the left, or right side of the histogram. And you can be on the extreme left or right, or in the middle, depending on what effect you want to show. This is what I got from your explanation.
