Hi Veerle, the anecdote you described about the supermarket, is the daily experience for people of color living in the Netherlands. I was born and raised here.. You are right, that when you smile and talk especially in their language, you are perceived as “ok”. But it shouldn’t be that way.. you shouldn’t have to proof yourself there just to showcase you are not harmful.. You had one experience, can you imagine doing this on a daily basis?
