depends what kind of soviet union were talking about lets assume were talking about it under it military peak under josif stalin if you don't agree pick ur own time but I think under stalin the military was at its peak and without nukes a battle against powers like the us it would end in a stalemate or a russian victory everyone after ww2 was tired and weak only the us still had the capacity to keep going well the soviet came out greater and stronger compared to gorb were it was weak and not ready for combat its unfair if you don't specify

i think you have your dates a little wrong. the russian civil war started in 1917, im not sure if that would mean that the red army was founded before, maybe im wrong just wanted to contribute that thought

In general it is impossible to compare Soviet military to modern Russian because Russian military is just a shadow of Soviet past and lacks most importantly supporting manufacturing base. Huge part of the modern Russia military amrs and equaipment are Soviet made and deeply modernized because Russia lacks both engineering prowess of the Soviet Union and manufacturing capacity of the Soviet Union and demographically is a ruined state. Watching this in 2023 after the war in Ukraine kicked off I'm almost certain that the soviet military is superior to the current russian military because of its absolute corruption and incompetent mixed unit tactics. Anyone agree or disagree?

Allso the biggest reason its so much less now, is that russia dont invade as much as lets say America. And so the military getts less income from its offensive operations. In a defencive situasion it would quickly rise
