Thanks for the awesome comments, everyone! This was a fun video to make, and I love strolling down memory lane with you all about first surround sound experiences. Many of them sound like my own! Now, what should we explain next?
Ответитьfirst time I heard surround sound at home (UK) was watching Top Gun DVD on my new NICAM (remember that?) TV. The opening sequence of the planes taking off from the carrier were jaw-dropping by the standards of the day.
ОтветитьI have 5.1 unit and I just use it stereo, why? because anything in surround or Atmos sounds awful. Atmos is just rubbish and spoils everything.
ОтветитьVery interesting. Thanks
ОтветитьThanks. Ps5 soundbar and the compatible games is nice with atmos. Ps5 setting and soundbar indicator enabled so I didn’t know what it was but I knew it sounded better.
ОтветитьI have the Samsung QN90B TV which supports Dolby Atmos and my PS5 which also supports Dolby Atmos.
My question: Can i hear Dolby Atmos only with these two? Even just a little?
Or is it better just to turn it off?

ОтветитьStar wars return of the jedi
ОтветитьThe Rock (1996) by Michael Bay was my first experience. Yes, that helicopter flying around. It was actually the second DTS movie theatre in the country, a feat for the size of the town and the cinema itself. :)
Ответить7.1.4 would be 11, not 9
ОтветитьSince every sound has its channel, you can scale the speakers all you want and get the desired effect. Also, the sounds aren't mixed at the channel level, only at the speaker one, so you'll get a better quality sound.
ОтветитьNow I wonder how they create Atmos audio and how that data looks
ОтветитьVery well explained and still simple to understand. Thank You
ОтветитьI have a Logitech Z906 set up for surround sound. When connected to PC i can see my sounds display, the speakers support dolby Atmos, and DTS but when I have Dolby Access set up it says the sound device is incompatible. Is there a solution to have them set up on the dobly access app?
ОтветитьDoes anyone still remember Dolby Atmos? (Or was it 3D glasses?) Thanks for this video taking me down memory lane of dead formats. Atmos included.
Ответитьfirst surround sound? Poltergeist!
Ответитьmulti driver multi speakers angle as amazing sound depth disguise

ОтветитьMy parents were obsessed with cinema and so I grew up in a home that always had a movie teather in the living room, i have watched so many movies on that and it always blew me away, now i have the old 5.1 surround that they gave me after buying an atmos system, so many memories 😊
ОтветитьI can save you lot of time and tell you what Dolby Atmos is. In a nutshell, it’s nothing. Literally worthless branded hot air that makes absolutely no difference when you watch a movie. For decades Dolby has been giant scam.
ОтветитьThe power of not watching digital trends 👍
Ответитьmy dad bought a 7.1 surround sound and we wired it up together and the first movie we watched was Pirates of the Caribbean at worlds end… i’ll never forget, hearing the sound come from all around me.
ОтветитьGreat simple explanations 👍👍
ОтветитьI need 2 eARC in and 1 eARC out switch, any suggestions?
ОтветитьI've heard Dolby Atmos in both theaters and in homes, and there's literally no difference between Atmos and regular surround sound.

ОтветитьNot everything you're saying is true . 5.1 and 7.1 can also produce independent sound individual speaker . you sound like an infomercial or representative for Dolby Atmos good grief at least be honest lol
ОтветитьTwister! My first dvd, we’ll and Matrix
ОтветитьWhat if the actors are white water rafting? Don’t we need speakers in the floor to capture the sound of flowing water? Is this left for the future revenue gains after people had spent on current technology?
ОтветитьCrazy o never thought of speakers in the ceiling
ОтветитьLoved this! Brilliant explanation.
ОтветитьMy question is: I have an Atmos capable AV receiver with a 5.1 speaker arrangement. When listening to Atmos content should I select Atmos or Dolby Neu X to get the best effect?
ОтветитьI'm 61 and I first my movie and it was Earthquake back in 1974, and it was the first movie and they invented surround speakers, so thanks too Earthquake we have surround sound as we know and the rest is history 👍🏻
ОтветитьThe first surround sound I heard was at a large music concert.
There were no digitised sounds at the time, nor any kind of FFT processing. The great sound we all heard was produced with some clever application of phase shifting techniques...

ОтветитьQuestion, I have a Yamaha TSR 5790 that has no atmos. Would adding atmos speakers to this receiver to the rear top wall make a difference in sound or would I need to upgrade to a atmos capable receiver to take the sound effect to the next level.
Ответить1st Surround experience was Star gate. My Fav. Surround moment is Star Trek: Generations (Bird of prey space fight)
ОтветитьI first heard surround sound in the first Batman movie (oh glorious Michael Keaton) back in 1998 or 9. My first home theater movie was Jurassic Park in a Denon Receiver + JBL speakers back in 2004. Magic! From VHS still. Not quite digital but the Denon and JBL did a pretty decent job. I still view Jurassic Park first on any new piece of hardware to this date. And Twister, of course. I can´t spread so many Atmos speakers in the house yet.
ОтветитьMy first memory of surround type sound was ‘Lawrence of Arabia‘. The next was ‘Earthquake’ at a cinema in Leicester Square, though it was difficult to tell which deep rumbling sounds were ‘earthquakes’ from speakers and which were from trains on the Piccadilly Line underneath.
ОтветитьFirst home SSound movie I watched was Jurassic Park. The first time I really heard it surround me was the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan. Watching a particular Band of Brother Epi, a surprise mortar round actually sounded like it flew into my living room and scared the crap out of me.
ОтветитьAmazing, but one problem, the visual is at the front only, so it just cool gimmicky sound. Give me a 360 immersive screen as well then I will be impressed. Also unless you have tons of money I think it's really a synthetic virtual sound scape.i reckon 7.1 or Dolby digital is fine and improvement is only incremental for a large outlay
ОтветитьSurround Sound is something that is still magical to me. When you experience great surround sound you can't go back to stereo.
ОтветитьThe main reason I bought JBL sound system is for Dolby Atmos for some games I play on Xbox Series X and unfortunately I had no idea PlayStation 5 doesn’t support Atmos though
ОтветитьThanks Cal Den. Good Video!
Ответитьyeah I have old Yamaha Surround system from like 2010 or something. Got for my PS3/ps4 so while playing games or watching Blu ray movies could get full theater sound like feel, Only thing is never got subwoofer for it, just had 5 old wooden speakers I hooked up and that was amazing. watching blu ray movies or even DVD with Dolby digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 was so amazing. Like The Last of us 1 on ps4, hooked up with Toslink cable to my surround system.
The first movie that I can remember was prob 1989 batman with Michael Keaton in at theater then later getting DVD I think? Wanting my sound system. Was so happy and proud after getting my ps3 and using not just for gaming but watching HD movies with my surround system. I still have that old system but it doesn't even have HDMI, Everything has moved too that and even my PS5 does not have toslink option. Was so annoyed when Sony didn't put that on ps5. Cus both Ps3/ps4 and Pro had Toslink option.
Stop Making Us FooL ........... Human got 2 Ears .......Left & Right....Best channels system is Stereo....Hundred Speakers but only 2 Channels
