Most indian curries don't have sugar in them. If they did, it's in very small quantities. However indian sweets are insanely sweet because of the loads of sugar added to them and boy do indians consume sweets...I mean a lot. In comparison american donuts are mildly sweet lol. Yeah overall indian dietary habits are bad with too much carbs in the form of rice and flat breads, but not enough protein and other nutrients. It's not just poor indians btw. That's just the way indians in general eat. Even indians who are well off are used to eating big portions of rice or chapatis with little veggies(in the form of lenthils sauce, vegetable stir fry etc., Indians who consume meat do so in far lesser portions than their american counter parts. Thanks for talking about it doc. My fellow indians need more awareness on the issue.

Dr Berg, my DNA is Indian, and I grew up in New Zealand, so my palate wants it all Indian and western. Such a foodie…

Health and taste is my motto

Indian food if eaten according to Ayurveda medicine is not so sugary…

At large people in india don’t follow ayurvedic food combinations therefore there is obesity and disease…

Each state has different food culture…and during festivals yes lots of sugary sweets, but if consumed in accordance to yoga and ayurveda you can have oh so yummy flavours and health

Western and Chinese snacking and franchises such as McDonald’s, Burger King, etc about 20 years ago has created a massive shift in conscious eating..

It’s like when America starts opening their eyes to the damage that the fast food industry has created in overall health… they bring that junk to india..for commercial reasons - population more people to eat McDonald’s and Burger King etc

So I use your formula keto/intermittent fasting on vegan western and European diet when I feel like enjoying the flavours of the west 😋 and I use Ayurveda and yoga to guide me to eat Indian food mindfully - during intermittent fasting.

Hope this is helpful information about Indian diet Dr Berg.

And thanks for your pearls of wisdom! 😇

I am from south India, we never put sugar to any dishes other than deserts. Also ,My father tells that white rice and wheat came with westernasation and their generation used to eat millets and unrefined oil. We need to get back to our roots.

I think we Indians do use a lot of sugar but mostly in sweets and desserts (which we eat a lot)
Other than that most Indian dishes do not have sugar as we love our spices, the concept of adding sugars to Indian dishes is something only found outside India as a way to decrease the spiciness of the food. If you want good Indian food then always see the authentic Indian recipes as they are usually devoid of sugar. In India, we prefer not to put sugar in our dishes.

India had a relatively good diet for thousands of years. Unfortunately, they now consume and produce as huge amounts of sugar. They have gone the way of America in their own diatery way when they become more wealthy .

I'm from South India. While it is true that we merely look for an excuse to consume sugar in some form, I'm afraid rice isn't the culprit. We have had over two hundred varieties of rice across our country and many are not available now. We consume traditional varieties of unpolished rice that have many medicinal properties apart from being low glycaemic. Only the polished varieties widely used for easy cooking is the culprit.

Just want correct some information is our regular diet meals does not have sugar, we can prepare it without sugar only in some parts they add sugar to control the spice in restaurants they do it because it will very spicy for non Indians...in home we cook it we are almost sugarless in all our daily routines meals.. that's the good part but the bad part , our sweets, we eat it whenever festival's come , most of the Indians have habit of having tea and coffee daily n we add sugar to it. Traditionally, we use to have herbal medicine- suran after the festival's it will clear our stomach with all the toxins after the festive.. but due to modern cultures emerges, this habit is reducing but people are changing to palm sugar and jaggery..in my home nowadays I make only jaggery sweet dishes and also will buy sweets with less sugar..but still it is long way to go..the obese increase is not only because of diet its because of our occupation changes...Traditionally we are farmers, now we are moving into jobs that does not require hard labor so it's causing people inactive n obese..

I grew up in neighboring country Pakistan and its same there too. My concern is that sugar is expensive and food makers are using industry substitutes to sugar that are not even regulated by authorities. On top of it culture is to eat farmer's food (rice & wheat being the staples). Societies in that region require massive education on food and health.

I am not an Indian, but I live there. What you say about sugar consumption in India is absolutely correct. And even more, the use of carbohydrates in the form of rice, chapatis, rotis, but also junkfood is enormous. They eat mainly rice (or chapati or roti) with a very little bit of vegetables and/or meat. Like more than 3/4 rice and rest veg and/or meat. I keep on telling them to eat much much veggies and proteins (eggs, fish and meat) and less carbohydrates. I also tell them to stop having sugar, like chai without sugar.
Indeed most people from age 40 have either diabetes or are pre diabetic. They refer to me as being skinny; often their perception is, that I am not healthy because of that. However, my weight on the BMI index is quite normal. What I also notice here, is that the overweight people mainly live in the cities. Farmers and nomads are not overweight at all, are in general quite strong; nomads even are a good example for me regarding good health. I am aged nearly 67 and generally in good health, although I have osteoarthritis, what I keep under control with my diet (good food is the best medicine) and frequent exercise (cycling, swimming and hiking).

Hello Dr Eric. I am an Indian and love watching this channel. With due respect, however, you have shown an incorrect map of India. It's politically incorrect and shows the northern Kashmir as a part of Pakistan. I dont think it makes a difference to you, but I am sure you want to be right in the content you show. Hence, wanted to point this out to you. Please do change this detail if possible.

Sir, few corrections:
1) India is the largest consumer of sugar in absolute terms but we should be looking at per capita. US tops the list at 125g of sugar per person per day. Contrast this with India at 5g. It's not even in the top 30.
2) Obesity % in India stands at 5% while US is at 36%. India comes in the bottom 20 countries with obesity rate

My Indian husband is 38 yrs old and has non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Every meal he eats consists of like 2 cups white rice and approx 1/4 cup chicken or beef curry etc on the side.
No matter how much I try to tell him the white rice is killing him, he thinks his diet is so much more healthy than ours here in USA.

Dr. Berg could you please do some videos on the impacts of consuming high amounts of white rice on health.

'Packaged' food in any store is full of salt, sugar and additives! And most Indian dishes are on the savory, spicy side (especially breakfast options). What I think needs to be pointed out is that in comparison to the tiny Indian specialty stores, normal grocery stores in the West have SO much sugar in literally everything - yogurt, plant based creamers, sauces, crackers and even bread! I spend 10 minutes in the bread aisle every week to find a bread without 5g sugar in each slice! However, I do agree consumption of carbs (rice, wheat) is definitely higher than 'protein' in India. And relying heavily on protein isn't really required unless you're an athlete!
