Success Behaviors: The Key to Team Harmony - The Brilliance Mine

I was talking to someone, and she said, "You use the word success behaviors. I've never even heard that. What is that—success behaviors?" The way I use that word is behaviors that you have agreed on with your team that they lead to success. It's a great way to increase harmony, success, and accountability in your team.

Every company I've ever gone into that had any kind of problem violated this success behavior. Here it is: complete your agreements. There are three parts to that.

**Part 1: Make Only Agreements You Can Keep**

The first one is to make only agreements you're willing and intend to keep. We've all met people who are people pleasers, saying yes to everything and ending up overwhelmed. With this success behavior, you give them permission to say no if they can't do it.

**Part 2: Communicate Broken Agreements Promptly**

The second part is to communicate any broken agreement at the first appropriate time. For example, if you realize you can't meet a Friday 5 PM deadline on Friday morning, communicate it then rather than waiting until the last minute.

**Part 3: Clear Up Broken Agreements Promptly**

The last part is to clear up any broken agreement at the first appropriate opportunity. Using the example of a report due by 5 PM, if it's not possible, communicate and offer a new deadline—clearing up the broken agreement.

Discuss these success behaviors with your team, getting their input rather than dictating. This ensures their buy-in, allowing you to hold them accountable and teach them to hold each other accountable. This approach significantly improves the team culture.
