Odopi: The Craziest D&D Monster I've Ever Seen

Can you imagine two of these things communicating over a distance in the dark? Strange gurgling noises and mad hand clapping echoing off the hills and coming from the trees at night? Terrifying.
And I can imagine them reproducing by two meeting up, grasping a few hands, and then TEARING THOSE ARMS OFF AS THEY FUSE TOGETHER TO CREATE A NEW ABERRANT HORROR! A flopping mass of limbs and eyes grasping at whatever is near to consume it as it first drags itself along, then begins hopping, and finally rolling as new arms, claws, and eyes sprout.
GAH!

carceri is neat. I like how people don't even know if there is more than one planet on its deepest layer since even if you assume the most forgiving pattern from the increasing distance of the worlds in the previous layers, there would be an unimaginably vast space between the planets.

I can totally see a little girl having this as a pet playing patty cake with it, also I can see a high level warrior in the likeness of guts from berserk just using his/her legendary tower sword holding it up as it rolls over them to kill it in one blow lol

If it has eyes on each palm, then how does it clap? That's gotta hurt.

Considering they’re not trapped in Carceri, but are born there, they might be some sort of cosmic jailers, that hunt down prisoners that manage to escape

I get the feeling that the Gloom Hands in Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom took some inspiration from this creature.

The Odopi look closest to what I imagined the Shoggoths of Lovecraft’s stories looked like when they were chasing you. Yeah, they’re normally formless balls of organic sludge, but they would form sensory organs and limbs to complete tasks. When their task is chasing you and ripping you apart, like it was in the Mountains of Madness, this would be it.

Anyone else see this thing and immediately think it runs up on people slapping them repeatedly in an attempt to communicate? Like it just keeps slapping out of no where.

Tbh watching them talk would probably feel like some absurdist moment. Like the knee slapping clapping dance from SpongeBob. Or some encounter out of wonder over yonder

Honestly I feel it would be terrifying if a party kills one and it becomes like a wolf spider with babies to where you see it explodes into Addam's Family-like Things that skitter away. Like a sort of Earthworm reproduction lol

Monsters native to Carceri running loose in your dimension is bad news for more reasons than just those specific monsters. These things being as distinctive as they are make for excellent plot hooks.

Also, now I've got the Katamari Damacy theme stuck in my head.

I could totally see some big talking point about the nature of Carceri and these Odopi being a big reveal of “these things aren’t the prisoners! They’re the wardens! They aren’t meant to be here and they know it!”

Asexual reproduction? FFFFF, BORING! If I ever add them in I will make them fuck in the most horrifically alien way possible and have everyone watching make a WIS save or else they take psychic damage from the sight

When I used these guys I tweaked them a bit lore-wise to make 'em even more worrying. There wasn't a "Center" to them, just a dimensional rift.
There is only one Odopi. Every encounter with one is just a hole where a bit of the Odopi leaks out into the normal planes. No one has ever been able to map out where it really is, because no one who stumbles onto the plane of Odopi is coming back to tell anyone about it.

After being surprised by this monster in Tears of the Kingdom I will attest to how terrifying they are.

There is this old game from the wii called Lost in Shadow that has a shadow version of one of these and it is horrifying

New creature; the Chilpii: a Small creature possessing 6 eyes and 8 arms plus a mouth in the palm of each 6 fingered hand!
It's stats can be determined later and you can say that it's in the range of 2 to 5 CR maybe.
It's the child of an Odopi and it's only a few growth spurts and one physical reshuffle away from being an Odopi itself! Appearance wise it's basically a cube with an eye in the center of each face with a long thick arm sprouting from each corner, the arms are thick enough that the eyes look somewhat squished in between them but that's just because the internal structure of the arm has musculature and "long bone plates" surrounding the esophagus (the bone plates allow the esophagus to expand when eating but retain enough rigidity and structure to support the movement and function of the arms with a lot of sturdy connective tissue between the forearm and upper-arm plates in exchange for having no joints or sockets)

Lord, communicating one would have to involve your character engaging in an intense hambone session.

A “fun” encounter to do I think would be have your group run into one, make it…somewhat challenging, make this thing gurgle and clap a lot at them in a jovial manner. If your group decides to take it on and manages to kill it…have it’s mother show up, larger and pissed that you killed her son who just wanted to play

I assume they reproduce through regenerative cloning, slice off a hand or arm and it'll grow into a new Odopi

I was already planning an infernal circus encounter/scenario/event for my party, as we've taken a planar shifting turn and I can't get the thought of clowns being fiends out of my head ever since, and now I know exactly what is causing the "applause" in the main showroom/tent where the stands are seemingly empty, yet a roaring applause can be heard. Not cheering, but clapping. I was going to have this be a thing anyway as ominous description, but now I can have an Odopi there trapped in a magical cage specifically to be the "applause" when in actuality it's crying for help.

I don't know how they're supposed to reproduce, but I like to imagine they just occasionally lose an arm and a small part of their central core and it can grow back into a new one. Like, who wouldn't want a 6 or 7 foot long arm that counts as a medium creature all on its own teleporting around, throwing rocks, and trying to strangle people.

As DM, I would describe its teleport as "A spectral sphere like an eye surrounds the creature, shutting like a blinking eye, leaving nothing behind. The eye opens again over the wizard, followed by a mess of hands, claws, and pain."
