I wonder if people with more money than sense just see all those 9's in the model name, and see the high price, and assume it's the best.

Currently looking at buying a 9900k for 160$ used to replace my 9700k. And I’m contemplating not doing it. But I also won’t upgrade till 2025 if I don’t buy the cpu. Pls help 😂 my brain is not comprehending this dilemma

Seems like Intel cpus hold their value too much for it to be worth upgrading on the same platform. You might as well buy a new cpu on a new socket and get the same performance bump at the same cost. compare that to am4 where you could save a lot of money buying a new cpu used and put it into your old motherboard. Upgrading within your socket on intel seems like the Illusion of value savings because of scalping

So i build my cheap (about 400-450€) pc tower at the start of 2020 with an i3 9100f and after 1 year or so i wanted to upgrade to a better one and decided to buy an i7 or i9, found the 9900 for 300€ but my motherboard wasnt compatible with the i9 ( didnt knew that updating my bios would enable my motherboard to use it) so i got an i7 9700f for like 210€ . In octomber im like yo my motherboard have the latest bios version so i can buy the 9900 and get better optimisation for work and games and i dont have to swap anything else cuz im lazy af. Found an used i9 on amazon for the same 300€ and im like naah. So now i got an 13900kf+cpu bracket+mb+new ram and my old components (9700f , the motherboard , 32gb ram, an 480gb m.2 sata with windows and aditional new 2tb m.2 nvme and my first gpu gtx 1650 that i swapped after i got the i7 ) are now the workstation and the new parts are for my daily use pc. And yes i can confirm that people want to buy it cuz they are lazy and think that will be cheaper until they see the price and decide to spend more than double for a huge improvement. same goes for gpu. Stay awesome people.

2 months late but i got my boy a used one for $109 on ebay as a christmas gift, he currently has an i3 9100f, tested it at the dudes house and it worked perfectly, so excited for my bud to get this and pair it with his 5500 XT, a bit overkill but he needs a cpu that'll last him a bit due to his low budget (under $100 atm) and it being very hard to find jobs in our city

Wow that's a shocker. I assume these prices are in north america. Here in Czechia (where I am from) I am seeing whole systems with i9-9900k often with rtx 2080s/TIs for 700-900€. Nice looking cases, plenty of ssd storage and decent PSUs. So no bottom tier components thrown together to flip more expensive parts, just decent systems overall. I guess people see "i9" and automatically assume it must be good.

According to User Benchmark, an i5-12400 outperforms an i9-9900K by about 7%. You can buy one new for $150 including a stock
fan. I guess some people have more money than brains.

Recommending garbage MB's...??? SOME people have high end MB's and still run 9900K's now and they work just fine. Plays all the newest games fine with a RTX 3080. No plans to upgrade anytime soon either as there is no need. Would I buy one new today, ah no, not for $500 I wouldn't. But then I also wouldn't buy what you were recommending either with the garbage MB's. I figure I have another 3 or 4 years with the 9900K. But then I will never build an AMD machine for myself in the 1st place. Been building machines for almost 30 years and I will never build an AMD anything. There is really no reason to really, not when there is still rock solid stable Intel platforms to use.

I built my 9900K system in late 2019, and it carried me through the lockdowns like a champ. My friend who wanted to be cheap built a system at the same time based on the i5-8600, because “i5s are best for gaming”, are now constantly hounding me to buy my 9900K when I eventually upgrade 😂 He is exactly the type of person who would pay full price for a 9900K to not have to build a new PC. Never underestimate laziness.

Still running a 9900K@5ghz, its still a good CPU but showing its age in a few recent poorly optimized titles even at 3440x1440 using a 3080TI. A couple of games do slightly bottleneck the GPU.

I'm convinced that the people who are still buying 9900k's don't know what their buying and they don't realize their getting ripped off. The 9900k is pretty slow for today's standards and I know things such as frame time and one % lows have to be terrible for modern games.

First time I've had someone talk folks out of buying their product. Kudos for that! Although I can see why someone would want to buy the i9-9900k if they have a platform running that supports it and that is software. If you have been running a system for a few years with an OEM license for Windows and have a lot of production software installed, it can be a lot more than just a couple of hours for the motherboard change. Plus, you might have to buy a new copy of Windows.

There’s been a few channels that have pointed out the increased latency of the 12th-14th gen chips. I personally haven’t noticed it on my 12700k, but if you want the lowest latency possible, you’d want 11th gen or lower.

9900K is very good for games still but certainly better CPU can be had for less. For example i7-10700K is cheaper than i9-9900K albeit being similar 8c 16t CPU not to mention newer ones like i7-12700K which are 300 as new.
