Putin’s alternative narrative and interpretation of those events really goes to the heart of the matter. Under vassals (such as Yanukovych) Ukraine - already riven by age-old social and political fissures exacerbated by the 70-year Soviet “experience” was merely seen as Putin’s Playground (also the title of an excellent documentary on the subject by Polish director, Konrad Solajski). The Orange and Maidan Revolts were anathema to Putin and his siloviki (how dare the serfs revolt against the emperor!), so blaming the “evil west” for everything was the Kremlin’s knee-jerk response.
