It's easy to tell just by the idiotic comments in here that many people failed to see the message behind what he was saying. These idea are adopted by many successful people in their own way. Fear is used as a trigger, not a tranquilizer.

Maybe you should take your own advise and engage in constructive conversation instead of being negative. If you have some constructive criticism, then I'd like to here it because saying someone is being negative isn't an argument. In fact, I was simply poking fun at his analogy. Ok....the reason why he says that is this: He's referring to a PRIMAL VISCERAL fear of human beings and comparing it to the logic of more being killed by deer. He is saying that we are not LOGICAL about out fears, because our fears are controlled by the lizard brain! Seth is the smartest guy around. His comment is based on YEARS of thinking ahead, predicting and doing the hard work that now takes the rest of us a tonne of brain pain to work out.

So i am more likely to be killed by a deer that can throw a shark at me thanks for letting me know that.

More people are killed by toasters than sharks. In fact according to British statistics you're more likely to be killed by your trousers than a shark.

@ToraJutsu01 I think he would of been better off saying people that drive on the roads and have a fear of swimming in the ocean due to sharks have a irrational fear. That would make sense because fear of swimming in the ocean due to sharks and just having some phobia of sharks in general are two different things.

@ToraJutsu01 I know I was just poking fun at his bad example of that. Hes appealing to peoples pirmal fear of sharks then using statisics to show we should be more afraid of deer, which doesn't make any sense. Its not the deer we should be afraid of its the assumed risk of driving and this had nothing to do with primal fear of predators.

@AtheistKharm its about rationality and statistics. your more likely to die from a deer, but your brain doesn't react that way.

@AtheistKharm heh, no it still makes sense... he's just saying we are not that scared to drive in a car for fear of dying from a deer, but we do have people that would prefer to not swim in the ocean from fear of sharks..

So using the cellphone is not a big deal, - not at the operating theatre or gas pump?. Is it fear or risk avoidance?.

@FilthyVirus I didn't miss the point I was just poking fun at his bad examples. Hes good at marketing his point, but hes not a neuroscientist and it shows. Around 2:25 he starts going off the deep end with claims as to what your lizard brain (i.e. Amygdala) plays a role in. A lot of the risk evaluation and planning that hes referring to when deciding on what business plan or w/e is done by the executive system. Hes really using an appeal to a negative view of the "lizard brain" to make a point.

Good video, except for the amydala (lizard brain) isn't responsible for reproduction like he mentions. It's specifically used for survival emotionals like fear and anger, but has nothing to do with reproduction. He mistook the entire limbic system for just a small part of it.
