Hovercrafts still run from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight.

Whenever I come across those TV shows about truckers who risk their lives delivering goods under perilous winter conditions, I think how much safer it would be to transport things in a hovercraft. It would be almost impossible for them to get bogged down in snow, and they could deliver across the ice no matter how thin it was.

The short answer is : it was designed by the English.

I do think the Hovercraft should comeback. The open seas are nearly the next freest thing outside of the open airs

I've always been fascinated with hovercrafts

I remember seeing a remote controlled hovercraft at a (now defunct) Radioshack store, and asked my parents for one for Christmas - my parents said we didn't have the money for such a gift, and I understood.

Christmas comes, and to my surprise, they did get me the remote controlled hovercraft! (And my sisters also got what they wanted to get ahahaha)

It was so much fun to play with - on ice, over water, on the ground - due to the reduced friction it would go SUPER FAST - was such a fun toy. I believe it is still stored in my parents' house

I reember reading about the demise of this service in the papers. Jumpimng into action, I booked a seat on one of the very last flights. I literally flew to France and then flew back again just for the experience! From memory, the windows were encrusted with salt and the spray was so high you couldn't see out anywhere. And it thumped from wave to wave all the way there and thumped from wave to wave all the way back.

There was a lot of standing around at either end waiting for the hovercraft to arrive, deflate, unload and then reload with its new complement of passengers. And sand. Lots and lots of sand.

Glad I made the trip though!

I much rather be on a hovercraft verses a plane. I will never step foot on another plane ever again. If I need to go somewhere I will travel by ship or car.
