Testing your soil is a critical part in fixing an ugly lawn. Without it, you really are guessing. Many local landscape supply stores will have a lab they can send your soil off to, or you can find a local university extension. I've also used Logan Labs, Soil Savvy, and My Soil if you're looking for something to mail a sample to.
