Easiest Walk-Ups and Walk-Downs On Guitar, Using 3 Simple Chords - Walking Bassline Challenge Ep 6

Hi James, at first: A wonderful lesson! It covers, what I am trying to figure out since quite a while.
One question: Why do we choose these notes as our walking base line? Why do we walk up e.g. from E to A via F# and G#? Is there a rule I missed?
I have tried to figure it out with the help of the chords in the song-key, but for me it is not clear.
