unpacking Succession's most dangerous character

Heya gang, just a bit of an addendum to the Shiv comment in the intro because people are somehow construing this one line as some sexist putdown about a female character???

First of all, I don't HATE Shiv, and I don't think she's an uninteresting or throwaway character because she's a woman. That's ridiculous. Do I think she's the "most interesting" character? No, I have some issues with the consistency of her writing, but she's still a brilliantly crafted element of the Roy's world, and provides an interesting commentary on the misogyny prevalent in a mostly male elite class. The characters are the best thing about the show, Shiv included.

So no, I'm not saying, "oh Shiv's your favourite character? You must be an idiot, she sucks!"

The line was just highlighting her habit of consistently self-sabotaging when she is SO CLOSE to reaching a position of influence, and how frustrating that must be if she's your pick for the throne. I know that other characters do this too (Ken being the main example), but her failure at the Pierces, followed by HER HUSBAND being the catalyst that destroys the kids coup in the Season 3 finale are the main elements that stick in my mind.

So, I was just saying: "Wow I'm glad that I don't keep getting disappointed by a character that routinely trips up JUST before the finish line, that would be so infuriating as a viewer."

If that hasn't been your experience and you love the rollercoaster Shiv experience and she's your ride-or-die, all the power to you! Maybe she'll prove me wrong and dominate Season 4, and egg on my face for doubting her.

But I just needed to clear up that "I don't know what to tell you...get a new favourite character" isn't some thinly veiled misogynistic dart. It's just a comment about the painful viewing experience that accompanies supporting any of these characters.

Succession's most dangerous character ended up being Tom, not this foo. Did you watch the show?

My fav character is Greg. Spoiler alert ! He is no bumbling idiot but he is a strategist. He didn't save those documents for the intention of blackmail. He saved those documents to save himself if Tom screws him over. Remember when Tom asked him where are the documents and he went "I will never tell". He knows how to play his hand. When Lukas tried to screw Shiv by making Tom CEO. In his mind he did the right thing by letting Shiv know of Lukas' subterfuge.

One of my fav moments of Greg in season 4 is when he just casually ears dropped a conversation between Matsson and his colleague using a traductor to later give the info to Kendall. I was like: The boy is learning

This show is bad

Ewan is Greg’s grandad, Ewan’s daughter is Greg’s mom, and Logan’s his great uncle, you got it mixed up a little, but that’s a very tiny detail

Greg does have a shred more humanity than the other cast, but imo that just makes him more irredeemable. He knows on some level that he's involved in crimes, in a horrible organization and doing horrible things to stay in a position of personal power. Greg knows what it's like to be the little guy, but he's such a worm he doesn't stand up for any of his principles when it might cost him some money/status.

Unlikeable? My partner and I really liked most of the characters

I don't think Greg is dangerous or a threat. He is opportunistic. Sure. But he is the best (or at least, the least despicable) character on the show. He is the only one who didn't grow up with privilege and had to go out of his way to look out for himself, and that makes it much easier to relate with him than with all the pure evils in the series.

Anyone betting on Kendall is an idiot though

I remember when Greg was my favorite character. But he turn into such a piece of shit in season 4 (that's not bad, is actually really good for the character), and i also started loving Connor like no other character on this show.

I loved Adrian Brody so much that I wished they gave him a bigger role, absolutely amazing 😍

Greg should have been king. If the show went on a few more years I think it would have had to end that way. Tom was right for the four seasons we had.

I know an actual Greg. Different name, but definitely a Greg. It is like having a chronic illness, being a friend of someone like this. Can't ever get rid of it.

I just finished the series and personally, I didn’t like Greg. I thought he was an absolute moron, who couldn’t string two thoughts or two words together, and he only existed to spread information. He is just as greedy and selfish and narcissistic as the rest of the family. He goes against his values and beliefs for money and he lies and schemes to get what he wants. I found the way he spoke and behaved very unnatural and strange. It was like he was an alien from another planet…

I think he's aware of the game and just goes for it, knowing everyone else is doing the same. There's an innocence about it

I literally would cringe when Gregory came on. Couldn't stand him. Someone else might not have bothered me so much, but he just didn't cut it for me.

Spoiler alert:

Something I noticed when watching the final episode was that there was one person who would “win” either way: Greg. Greg made a deal with Kendall to keep him in the company and even though he betrayed Tom, Tom wouldn’t kick him out of the company. Greg is the only person who would stay in the company no matter what, and that was not by accident but because he was able to play his way into that situation.

Greg was the one character I could absolutely not stand while watching the show. I mean every character was a bad person but something about Gregs plainly obvious parasitic behaviour really made me wanna put a hole in his brain.

This might be the first tv show that I have seen where I don't have a favorite character.
