Western students are amazed how the thesis/dissertation (論文) is of such low importance in the Japanese system; most of the focus is on the entrance exam to get in to university, when you are 18, rather than your academic performance in your final year. This is a fundamental reason why Japanese universities do so badly in the global rankings.
