He loved her, so he let her go... even though he knew she wouldn't come back. IF THAT ISN'T TRUE LOVE, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS.

At first, he wasn’t a healthy relationship, yes. This was simply because he didn’t really know what love was and he was so wrapped up in this double identity, thinking no one could love him because of his face (hence why he changed so drastically when Christine removed it, and he put so many words of hatred in her mouth before she even said anything).

He’d heard love, he’d seen it but he’d never experienced it nor had he been around people at all except for those early toxic environments and pure isolation. He experiences love for the first time in that kiss, and therefore finally feels it by Christine’s example. Real love, not infatuated possessiveness (which he confused with love because of his imposed isolation). And he lets them go because now he knows what love is, and what he’d been doing was not so.

He’d been taught unhealthy lessons his whole life, and Christine taught him otherwise so he told her he truly loved her (for the first time and with his new understanding of the word) and let them leave, recognizing what he’d done was not right. Though he had the meaning of it now and could perhaps be the lover worthy of Christine, he realized he had done too much and he COULD let them go because that’s what true love is, happiness for others. (He’d only been isolated with his own, and not the emotions of others, being that hurt child who never got to mature in one way.)

I know alot of people give butler shit for his voice but i look at it like he was alone down there and never had professional training or anything like that so he had to learn everything on his own so it kinda makes sense his voice is a lil bit off and not perfect

Great music great story all time classic obviously but overall just plain sad 😢brah. Like basically just a two hour movie explaining the deep emotional wounds inflicted on you when you love someone that don’t love you back. Words simply can’t describe how unbelievably painful that is, and that pain will never ever go away. You stuck with it.😢😢😢😢

The irony of the phantom is that the entire time he is experiencing an idolization of love. He is infatuated with Christine. Once he experiences her kiss of compassion and feels a real moment of human connection, which is true love, he experiences shame, guilt, and empathy. Only by receiving love is he able to die to himself and sacrifice his own desires.

I think Christine gave him that first kiss for Raoul, because she so desperately wanted him to live, but after seeing the Phantom's reaction, she gave him another kiss, for him and him alone.

It's harder to sympathize with him in the book because the narrator constantly calls Christine an innocent child. So kind of yuck, and then Erik has a full on torture chamber where you either bake to death or there's a noose in the room with which to kill yourself.

I fully believe that the author was painting Erik as a vampire. Christine, full of life and purity, and Erik, the walking corpse, emotionally starved. In the book, after Erik would kidnap her for different intervals, she would reemerge seemingly drained of life. Also, the man sleeps in a coffin haha.
In the end, Erik keeps muttering about being. "Alive," inbetween describing the kiss she gave him/he gave her. So he felt alive when she gave him affection, and then he dies when she leaves him. His source of love and affection left him and he died because his life source left.

So Erik was supposed to be painted as this metaphorical vampire in my opinion and was starving for love.

Don't get me wrong, I think everyone did a great job here, but I don't understand why they don't get singers who can act to play these parts and instead they get actors and teach them to sing. Like Beauty and the Beast for example. Emma Watson is a fantastic actress, but she can't sing that well and it's just not as good as it could be. Where's 'Home Is Where the Heart Is'? Or can I get a version of 'Belle' without the almost disturbing Auto-Tune? Everyone was going on about the ethnicity of the actress playing Ariel in the new Little Mermaid when I was just happy that they chose a woman who can seriously sing instead of getting another big name actress and trying to teach her/edit her audio for the part. This is honestly all I gave a shit about.

Phantom is not virgin- in various books, he paid for working girls “flesh” wearing masks. Police interviewed his favs girls who didn’t care about mask,& many men wore masks in red light districts back then. But, this is 1st time he gets kissed by his beloved Christine. In old bw films, & novels, Phantom was monster with skeleton head, no flesh at all, & Christine knew this but wanted to be a costar, under study, or have a singing career, = meeting upper class, & VIP getting of poverty, so she accepted his nightly singing lessons. Today, it defies common sense to have 0 flesh on one’s head, talk, etc., unless U r zombie (TWD series).

The phantom had an ego problem... He had to win ... He never learned true love and compassion because of his past. Christine showed that to him but she also needed someone loving and caring and soft and stable which the Phanton cant be whereas Raul can.

The phantom is really the mythological capturer of Persephone whereas Raul is her Saviour like Persephone 's mother. This is the mythology we know about about winter/darkness and summer/light.

Raul was the best choice because he was self sacrificing and wanted her to live whereas Eric wanted to win and saw Christine as a prize
