One of the most classic hikes in all of our national parks is the Rim to Rim hike in Grand Canyon National Park.

Most people, myself included, choose to do the rim to rim hike from the North Rim to the South Rim, because the elevation gain on the hike out is substantially less in this direction.

I opted to do the hike in one day, simply because it is an absolute nightmare to acquire a permit in Grand Canyon National Park to camp below the rim in the busy season.

Thankfully, no permit is required to day hike below the rim, so if you can muster up the stamina to roll out a minimum of 26 miles in a single day, with an elevation increase of some 5,000 feet on your exit, then this option gives you immediate access to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon!

I thoroughly enjoyed this outting, but I will admit that the physical exertion of hiking from Phantom Ranch to the South Rim on the Bright Angel Trail took its toll on me & left me completely useless the following day!
