Tesla is way behind on its self-driving ai; they aren't anywhere close to the leading company in all this. So why is this all about Tesla?

In 10 years they'll have it ironed out. The problem really is expectations. people automatically assume it should be here now or within a short period of time. These things take a very long time to get right, and even then they still can make mistakes. But with AI moving the way it is, in 10 years you'll for sure see a lot of the problems worked out.

It's the calm before the storm. When one company gets it right and this gets approved it's over and car sales will drop 70-80%. People are not prepared for what's coming.

What if your driverless car hits and kills someone? Are you criminally responsible? Or does the car company get hit with a lawsuit? Seems like a lot of liability issues

You have to think about every single cities type of street signs, pedestrian crossings, construction zone props, just every single scenario and road structure that’s different city to city and state to state.

I don’t see there being fully autonomous cars unless there are more standard and universal road signs (that are kept up and not overgrown with vines or knocked down), universal road lines, pedestrian and bike lanes, parking, and even installing sensors in these objects for the autonomous cars to communicate with or something like for special situations for unique parking lots or very busy cities. It’s all just too varied and too much to program and code.

Autonomous vehicles only need to be safer than human drivers. With machine learning and sensors being sorted I fully expect level 5 autonomy within 10 years.

The Elon montage at the start is incredibly misleading as he is clearly talking about different goals that all come under the various levels of self-driving-ness of a car. For example, Tesla did achieve fully autonomous driving on the highways all the way back in like 2016 or 17.

The elephant in the room is that they failed to answer is how safe are self-driving vehicles compared to human beings behind the wheel? That is THE question.

Also, why do self-driving vehicles have to be 99.999999% safe? 50,000 people die a year behind the vehicle of a car. We could save tens of thousands of lives by deploying self-driving cars TODAY with their imperfections.

This point is obvious but I see nobody discussing it.

to solve the issue of things the car might not be able to see they need to use special cameras every few meters that would be placed on the roads so then the car would be able to get info of unseen objects by proximity to these cameras, so then like 2-3 cameras that are close to the car would be sending info needed for the car to avoid crash with unseen objects that are obscured by another object (could be even another car)

In regard to traffic lights, they need to not rely on visual information that the AI might get misleaded by so instead of visual input of the traffic light it would get a fully accurate and reliable simple info data (sent to the car) of true/false of go/stop from the traffic light...that way such issue of car driving at red light would cease to exist, also to solve the issue of things the car might not be able to see they need to use special cameras every few meters that would be placed on the roads so then the car would be able to get info of unseen objects by proximity to these cameras, so then like 2-3 cameras that are close to the car would be sending info needed for the car to avoid crash with unseen objects that are obscured by another object (could be even another car).

I agree that we are many years away from level 5 self driving. However, I like to suggest that this video should mention the benefits of current technology. I use this technology as an ASSISTANCE. It is helpful for elderly drivers who are challenged concentrating for long drives or multiple distractions. I wish this technology would improve faster but gladly take what I can get. In the meantime, this should NOT be called Full Self Driving or Auto Pilot.

There are too many variables in the real world that cannot be accounted for or computed successfully. It is an intractable problem. And the "failure mode" of these cars vs humans is catastrophic. Whereas a human will make a mistake here and there, the magnitude is not that big. They are able to react to random occurrences reasonably effectively. But "AI" cars failure modes are random, inexplicable and fail at seemingly simple things. And when they fail the results are deadly. Humans do not function this way. Even if get to 99.999% consistency, the car will fail on some random input it doesn't understand correctly, or a bug, or whatever, and crash

We haven't switched to self driving cars because we are more comfortable with human beings killing people on the road than cars. Even with all the issues they have, and they do, a 99.99% safe self driving car is already better than a human being.

This is because self driving cars don't drink a 40ozer and get behind the wheel.
