I know this is beyond the scope of this video which is checking if the vanilla game holds up, but some mods like the Network Addon Mod significantly improve (I'd say to the point of being a must have) the transportation simulation which imo is the weak link of this game. And also let you do cool things like diagonals and a gazillion different types of roads.

Samuel L Jackson as Ordell Robbie from the movie Jackie Brown:

"Here we go. SimCity 4. The very best there is. When you absolutely, positively got to reticulate every motherfucking spline in the room, accept no substitutes."

I'm pretty sure that line is 100% accurate... 😎

There’s a mod called NAM (Network Addon Mod) that is pretty much essential, it has tons of new roads and features, for example diagonal streets 😉

i remember a good trick for money early on, is to establish a few mini towns around where you want to make the main city. Like, you dont need to build anythin gmajor , just establish them, and the in your main city tile, can sell all the excess reosurces and be in the green

The modding scene for SC4 is insane. One of my favorites is the SPAM collection. Massive overhaul for the farming systems in SC4. Then of course NAM. (Traffic overhaul). Then there's a few for handling the terrain funkiness that comes with the game.

I hope I can make a C:S2 mod that gives door bell sounds and knocking when you click on a building, like in SC4. I miss this detail :D

"Even after all these years...." which is why it's the longest-played, most modded, bestest city builder ever. LOL I've spent hundreds of hours in both SC:4 and Cities:Skylines (yes, that is downright embarrassing to admit) and I'm pretty sure there are aspects from both I love equally as well as dislike equally.

This looks better than the newest Simcity to me. They tried to commercialize the current SimCity for profit only and with SimCity 4 they still cared about their customer base.

I never liked Sim City 4 even when I got the expansion that supposedly fixed the abandoned building due to a long commute, either I am clueless on how to fix it. I tried everything from tearing down the buildings, building jobs closer and freeways and nothing worked this is with NAM too and I hated that, to me it was a major flaw and I thought the game was overrated.

its hard to belive this game is soo old and still an enjoyable game, even more than actual ones, the mods, like NAM, and all the rest like new buildings models, roads and vehicles textures, make this game even better, even with the risk of crashing, but still u can get fun each time... if this game had an updrade as they actualy have in mind sure we will have the best citybuilding game ever again. saddly the SC5 not fit the quality as 4...
If im not wrong u can actually make diagonals with the low den road, but had a little trick to make it possible

Last good SimCity game, but it was a rotting empire even back then.

The game was a pain in the ass broken in terms of stability. . the code was all designed around single core CPU . . it would crash constantly. If you had a Core2Duo or a Quad Core AMD it was a dump fest.

Also the transportation system was a shitshow .. You could build a high tech monorails right up to rich residential mansions and it would be at 2% usage. Pretty sure Elon Musk would step onboard even now.

I blame EA for how Maxis software died. Electronic Arts is total bloated trash as a publisher.

Thank goodness for the old school fan mods and hacks that got it working on early 2k. Not to mention the fan made buildings and architecture.

Landfills are tremendously expensive and take a long time to get rid of. You have to have enough Recycling centers to send all of your trash to. Then you have to wait until the trash in the landfill decomposes. Unfortunately you cannot transport trash in the landfill to the recycling center. The process takes several years.

I wouldn't normally mind too much but landfill tiles have a steep monthly cost. The moment a landfill tile's trash is gone decommission the tile to save on costs and so it doesn't fill with trash again.

SimCity 4 was my first ever proper time with city builder - I played it a long time after it came out on my first laptop but I utterly adored it. I think I played SimCity 3000 or something a bit when I was really young but that was mostly me doing disasters, but SC4 was all about making a beautiful metropolis.

I've always loved transit in these games, more than anything else, and I loved the way this game encouraged you to build entire regions of your cities to make an interconnected society. It looks really limiting now versus Cities Skylines (which I got when it came out because of how much I'd loved SC4 - I was amazed how advanced it was) but it felt super deep and intricate to play.

This was a pretty formative game for me, great to see it from a modern set of eyes.

The best way to start in Sim City 4 was to utilize buying multiple tiles. I would start one tile as a residential tile with connections to the next, the next tile over would be my industrial tile with connections all to my residential. Then I'd buy up more tiles for farmland. Many of my Sims would travel for work

Without mods, money in this game is a pain to manage. I was using industry quadrupler and commerce doubler. With mod we still need to manage the money (cant go too much crazy with building) but without those mods, we are missing some really cool buildings and additional gameplay mechanic. I built 1/4 of the entire region with cities when i was playing long time ago, everyone was connected, real monster of the gameplay. One city was full with skyscrapers, other one full with wonders. City demand for tourists was unbelievable so i added international aerodrome to import export people :D

You forgot to mention the ‘routes’ mechanic. Clicking on the ‘?’ With arrow tool will allow you to view the routes commuters take to get to work. It’s not an agent system like CS, but it’s pretty close; each house has a route calculated to their place of work.
