Indeed, the same as what psychologist Oliver Sacks mentioned in his famous book, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, regarding the purpose and use of psychology, it is questionable and debatable that psychology should only be used to identify people's weaknesses, deficits and problems. Besides curing diseases and diagnosing psychological diseases, psychology is just as capable of highlighting individual strengths and improving our lives for the better, just as what Martin Seligman is doing. This is what we need!

The Gratitude visit assignment is just weird to me. There's no one who did anything enormously important that changed my life and why should there be? I have remembered some of the things that some people told me, but in the end it's only me who can do something with that information.

I find it very sad that such a respected psychologist like Martin Seligman is spreading false information about the history of psychotherapy and psycoanalysis in particular. Seligman claims in his lecture that we have only been treating mental disorders for 50 years. Sigmund Freud developed the foundations of today's psychotherapy as early as 1900, namely in the form of two people sitting across from each other, talking, and the therapist using interventions to try to help the patient. He called this concept "the talking cure". CBT to which Seligman belongs, has adopted this approach in its principles, but actually entered the market only 50 years ago.
What I would be very interested in is wherer Seligman got the information that in the psycholoanalysis of this successful business man, whom he uses for a case report, would have consisted only of treating sexual trauma. That sounds highly unlikely to me. Today's psychoanalysis revolves around what is central for almost all people: building relationships with our fellow human beings. Psychoanalytic treatments are primarily concerned with understanding and correcting difficulties in the interpersonal sphere. I would have expected someone like Seligman to at least read up on basic fundamentals of psychoanalysis as well as the history of psychotherapy before giving a Ted Talk. I am very disappointed and I'm wondering whether he generally attaches very little importance thorough careful research and reporting solid facts. Because that is what we all expect especially from famous researchers and what good scientific practices relies on.

Men, when he said that the most happy persons are those who are very social, that really did hit me, because I'm experiencing a lot of happiness since I begun being more social at my own home, thing that I was not very much back then. I'm slowly making true connections with my family. Kkk the person that I'm finding more hard to do this is my brother, Lukas, but I know that I'm gonna succeed with him the same way I did with my other brother, Maicon.

Positive Psychology is definitely our pathway to The Meaningful & Fulfilled Life. Maslow coined the phrase Positive Psychology many years before Martin Seligman. Maslow was absolutely light years ahead of his time. Seligman also based his PERMA model on Maslow's work. I am a Positive Psychology Practitioner and I can honestly say that this is the way forward in psychological wellbeing, especially with regard to post-pandemic mental health.

We already understand misery. And rehashing the same negative experiences over and over again makes misery worse. Time to get SMART and study HAPPINESS. Actively teaching "victimhood", is NOT productive, positive or empowering. We know mental illness, we know diseases, we know negativity. Dr.Gabormate is MISERY itself. He's dreadfully grim and useless when it comes to GETTING BETTER. Positive psychology is PRODUCTIVE, HEALTHY, AND HEALING!! Anyone that hypnotizes you into victimhood is not there to help you. They are there to make you hopeless, make you feel WEAK and dependent on them/society. I hope more USEFUL psychologists can progress and help society by studying POSITIVE psychology. Because so far, many are creating dependency, so they have continuous $$$$clients. People LOVE feeling sorry for themselves, they LOVE hearing that they are a victim and nothing is their fault-its a highly marketable (and manipulative) practise that disempowers people and perpetuates the cycle of oppression.

You know, the source of the problem is tracked then it won't come right? Psychology and Neuroscience is great, but being aware... Of the sources of mental illnesses, will it not help?
But how to do that....
What is the CAUSE of all this? Maybe it can.... ultimately boil down to:
1) Parenting issues and style, hence genetics,
2) Grief or loss,
.
WHAT is the reason for the chemical imbalance in the brain? Don't you think people weren't I'll so often in the past? So many people these days! They don't deserve to suffer, i tell you.
Parents with mental illnesses/ personality disorders may be one of the direct factors that affect the mental health of children, hence they grow up, suffering the symptoms, and marry, pass it down to the next gen.
We'd be lonely if we couldn't marry.

That's it.

I studied psychology on a hunch early in life, then got distracted by life. Professor Seligman definitely RE stimulated my interest in the science of psychology.😉 How many people here are aware of the unattractive history leading up to "Learned Optimism"? After witnessing and experiencing trauma through a series of events, as well as a unassuming professional who gave me a nudge, a light bulb went off. I indeed knew something that I didn't know that I knew. Then after observing learned helplessness in abuse victims as well as experiencing and witnessing recovery I am more interested in the science of the human spirit. Super intrigued. What wonderful possibilities!

I accidentally helped/healed myself through remember the positive memories as best as I could in a daily meditations sessions. In the light of the positive, the negative could be worked out without force. Peace came, answers to questions, forgiveness, things worked out in dreams, understanding and personal changes. It was a fulfilling way of healing, easy, always joyful. And the changes in my feelings and behavior and dealing with people in a good way came fast. Yes, it took some time, but I did in one year, what psychologists didn’t think was possible in 35 painful years. Sadly I didn’t learn it from all my psychologists. They told me that I had to adapt my life to live my life as a patient. Take it for what it was back then. That’s my experience as a 50 yo cptss'er. A change in treating people psychological is really needed.
