Rip Copy-Protected DVDs with Free Software for Windows 10, Mac OS X or Linux

Doesn't work anymore with the latest version of HandBrake, I installed version 1.0 from the archive and that one does work!

The DVDs and Blue ray are the holy grail just copy them and back em up punk

Can anyone help I'm trying to capture my vhs tape to pc.. But I'm having copy protection issues.

Just to point out that this method doesn't work on later updates of handbrake where you have automatic updating. Keep an older version you haven't connected to the Internet.

To anyone who has been having trouble like myself with handbrake even after the VLC workaround, I've discovered a fix. I'm not entirely sure how it's exactly working but here it is: after doing all the instructions in the above video.
1. Reboot your system.
2. Download winx ripper (free)
3. Open winx ripper and load the source your attempting to rip.
4. Open handbrake and now attempt to open the source and it should be okay- worked for me hope it works for you.
Just make sure winx stays open.

I just update the handbreak program (2-14-23), and it will no longer work enve adding the VLC configuration any advice?

for a free program Handbrake does great...it doesn't rip every blu ray tho.

I have a Mac-- the 2nd link from the bottom on the libdvdcss page has a "macosx" file and it will walk you through installing it rather than doing the copy/paste into program files like you would on Windows.

I just did an update for handbrake, and after having to install .Net to make it run, now it won't read copywritten discs anymore. Beyond, libdvdcss 1.2.12, I don't see any other win 64 patches. It's not working for me anymore, and I was wondering if anyone else was having the same issue.

Didn't work as of today, 13 September 2022.
Did everything as instructed and still showing the copyright block.
Will go back to using DVD Decrypter which does work for my TV Show DVD's, but Handbrake was a whole lot easier.

been using this exact set up but since a new update on handbrake i had to start all over and the 1.2.12 doesn't seem to work still getting the "no source " on handbrake any help?

Everything seems Ok until I hit "Encode". 5 seconds later I get an mp4 file that's ZERO seconds long.

I still use a vinyl record player and VCR! hahah ... and my cassette tapes ;)

I have dvd collections of old shows and cartoons, I'd like to make mix dvds so I don't have to carry around the whole box sets when we travel. Like we could with music CDs. Is it possible? Can anyone help?

Only thing I change is in audio set it too ac3 passthru that's all you need too change when ripping DVDs az for Blu ray yeah na that's a different story and yep I go too the video store hire a bunch of DVDs and rip them too my external hard drive 🤫

get a region free blue ray player that has blue ray A , B , C , an pal to play regions 1 to 8
with that you can anything in the world and you can play vcd discs too............. this guy is funny ripping and bootleg movies LOL

I ran into an issue where some DVD's won't go through due to a copyright that is too new to the way this setup with Handbreak and VLC currently. Is there a way around it?

Are all dvd's 480P??? No matter what?

I have 3 external hard drives, and amassed a collection of about 450 films. I don't use handbrake all the time but it is very helpful. I use another DVD ripper made by Aiseesoft so I have 2 options

I added the libdvdcss-2.dll to my handbrake file and it worked fine for about 6 months when I just had a normal DVD-Drive. I just installed a Blu-ray DVD drive on my PC and Handbrake will not work. Is there anything else I need to add to handbrake or another program to be able to rip Blu-rays with Handbrake?

Are the chapter marks included in the ripping process, so that you can skip chapters when watching with Plex?

Did not work on my widows 10, had to down load other programs, so just uninstalled handbrake and every add on, just buy the software to do this ! saves a lot of time, and risks with 'free software'👎

You own the DVD but not the copyright. If there is software on it you have even less right to copy that. I chose to just have a DVD player. On the other hand, if the media was released on SD memory, I would use those. The region code is a whole other thing in my opinion. If I buy a DVD, and then find it is the wrong region, this is a good reason to rip it and deal with that. I really do not like region codes. I REALLY HATE REGION CODES!

Also, Handbrake is great for blu rays but won't rip the menus, and the whole DVD, just the movie itself. I want the WHOLE disc. How do I rip a complete VTS folder into a prepared decripted form so I can burn the ENTIRE DVD MENUS AND ALL onto a disc? If you do it with the Ashampoo it doesn't work. It wrecks the picture.

Fuck man. If you got an entertainment center WHAT ELSE are you going to put on it? A fucking fern? A vase? You certainly don't own any books. You have to hook up a DVD player AND take a disc out and put it in the machine. Times is hard.

Just followed your instructions and currently converting Taps to Super HQ 480 MP4 format; if it works as you say then I will be doing some serious condensing of DVDs..... now how do I learn to do Blu-rays????? Update: After ripping DVD, it only had the first 40 minutes in the file with the remaining 80 minutes missing...... Did I miss something??? Update of update: I switched the general settings from Super HQ 480 to fast 480 and the whole movie converted; was this due to a possible compression issue??
