The consequences of NASA fumbling & a private company having control over something as significant as space travel could be severe since space exploration will--one day--permanently change the landscape of humanity.

Humans have been on Mars for decades. That planets past civilization ...or current one has left many artifacts our government has been harvesting then burying in depots across the planet in anticipation of us "officially" landing on that planet. This would be true if photos/videos from that planet indicating a destroyed civilization are true.

Simple: it's estimated that a crewed Mars mission would cost, in total, from 500 to 600 billion dollars.
Sadly, no government is going to spend that much money on something like this unless there's an extraordinary reason.

Actually, John Kennedy was not a fan of space as such. He funded the Apollo Moon landings to beat the Russians to the Moons, not out of a sense of adventure and discovery. Without that race with the Soviets, he would not have funded Apollo and would not have cared one iota about landing on the Moon.
