Can I give a shout-out to monopods? They're great if you can find a way to stabilise them using your body which you often can especially if there's somewhere to sit such as a street-bench or a set up steps. They're easier to carry than a tripod and if you're photographing somewhere where tripods aren't allowed you can usually get away with a monopod. In addition as you get older (I'm in my early 70s) your hands develop more shake — monopod to the rescue if you're just going out for a wander around.

A lot of possibilities. You lens have front focus/back focus issues. You selected the wrong focus point / you focus on the wrong place. You focus and recomposed with a large sensor cam AND at big apertures. The camera's sensor was made like that. The sharpness settings in your cam's (if there is this option) set too low. Lens is entry level, or poor quality.

Hi Paul - loving your videos, so very helpful. I just purchased a D7200 and i watched one of your older videos where you specify to use AF-C and then sing point for focusing. I specifically take photos of my sons rugby matches and i have seen other vids saying to use 3D tracking or even Dynamic area...do you have an opinion? for rugby do you still think it should be single point or 3D etc? thanks so much

Thank you so much Paul. I have been taking photos with a Canon Rebel T7 for about an year. It only gave me shitty soft focus photos that look good only in a phone screen . In any larger screen they were out of focus good for nothing useless pictures. I had been shooting in default ONE SHOT mode all this time. After watching this video I changed it to AI FOCUS. OMG Icant believe my eyes. It improved my photos so much, crisp sharp very well focused photos. I was about to smash this camera on a rock. You saved my good camera and saved money on an other camera as well. Thank you again very much.

I think another good topic to cover relating to this for us novices is the difference between the amount of focus points to use. IE: Why use 51 point focus instead of single point focus, and examples of the differences.

Thanks again!
