I hiked all over Israel. Shvil ha'Yisrael (The Israel Trail or Israel National Trail) runs the entire length of Israel. In the North I camped with Jackals. Very sweet and curious. In the south I hiked the three Machteshim, the three craters - IN WINTER. Carry your water. Saw Onagers and Yaelim (Ibex). I hiked all over Haifa, and also in the Carmel. I re-discovered the Giboa Mountains, South of Ketef Shaul, the Shoulder of King Saul. We also did the Wadi Ammud. Fabulous. When I was sent to Beersheva, I used to hike in the southernmost Judean Hills. Once a Colonel called me - go back to your car NOW. The call had gone out to the West Bank Arabs to tow my Subaru. I did so, drove to the top, parked at Kibbutz Kerem Shalom and did the hike backwards (down first). Good thing that the IDF monitors Arab communications and knows everyone's cell numbers. Nearby is Tel Arad that Israel has excavated. This is a Temple to Jehovah and his wife, Asherah. One of my favorite hikes was around lake Hula, during the migration seasons. So many birds, and the Israeli frog, thought extinct, is back! I also hiked around the West side of the Kineret (lake Galilee). I understand there is rafting down the Jordan. Many times I climbed Har Meron, the highest Mountain inside of Israel. Somewhere North of there is a magical indigenous forest, one of the few remnants of Mother Nature. I seem to recall seeing buck (Antelope, not deer). And deer. I never had a single problem, except for water.
