SHOULD YOU WATCH HUNTER X HUNTER 1999 OR 2011?

I thought I just hated Hunter X Hunter once I finally finished 2011. I didn't think the themes were very well developed, I thought the exploration of the characters was really kind of minimal and should have been a greater focus, and I was deeply annoyed at how SLOOOOW the story progressed; I really was not a fan of the episodes backtracking to re-explain a character's actions, or explore the exact mechanics of someone's thought process or actions.

I thought the show was incapable of showing over telling, and I was upset since I loved Yu Yu Hakusho so much.

I am still really shocked that I love 1999 so much, I just finished it and holy moly was it everything I want in a show. It really solved all the problems I had with 2011. My only criticism of the show's production or direction is in the sound direction, the sound effects really could come off as cheap or repetitive- but while it's something I'd want improved, I'm fine watching with that negative.

I was also interested in the fact that while the 1999 dub varies more in quality regarding the side characters, it really has some incredible emotional range, nuance and well deserved script/translation changes. Some surprisingly realistic/genuine sounding deliveries. Comparing to 1999, the 2011 english voice cast has a trouble with sounding somewhat stereotyped and exaggerated, they still have a good emotional range, the direction just lacks that focus on a down to earth or just human delivery.

They definitely didn’t improve Leorio as much as Gon, Killua and Kurapika but it makes sense since his goal doesn’t require him to be insanely strong

The tone of yorknew is better in '99. And obviously Kite being removed from episode 1 in 2011 was a bad change. Not a fan of the filler content in 99 though. Also, I feel like I should mention that while 2011 did cut some stuff from the manga, the fact that it didn't have some stuff that the '99 anime added isn't "cut content", it's just not including stuff that the '99 series made up.
Ultimately, the 2011 series has the biggest advantage though: the 99 series stopped before the greatest arc of all time.

1999 > 2011 and its not even a competition people just choose the newer one bc of le heckin modern art style and chimera ant arc (it drags on for too long and its kinda mid)

1999 is like watching Ghost in The Shell or Ninja Scroll with Hunter X Hunter theme. 2011 is like One Piece in comparison.

I think the best route to do would be to watch the 1999 anime and read the manga. I really don't like the 2011 anime, it feels like it doesn't do the characters justice. Maybe the plot, but not the characters.

To be fair 2011 has the most amazing and well written music I have encounteed in a long time and I loved it for it and how that music fit each scene… also great pacing and nice flow, very shonen-esque at the beginning but quite subversive towards the end… some of the 99 scenes and its overall quality of scene composition is amazing. Masterful

I grew up with the 1999 ver and was upset with how the 2011 looked. They made look it like a cutesie shounen anime.

I cant judge the plot coz i have yet to watch the 1999 version but after a few checks, when it comes to art, i prefer the 2011 more coz i can barely see anything other than the character when it comes to old animes in dark scenes

1999 is way better hands down and I'm not saying this due to nostalgia since I've recently rewatched 1999 version (plus all OVAs) and compared it to 2011 version and the pacing, character development, music and even animation are way better in the old version. Yes, even animation is better (plus art overall, characters and everything else are much better drawn), e.g. compare Gotoh's coin scene where Gon had to guess in which hand he had it. It's amazing that anime from 20th century did a better job than 21st century one. Director in the old anime knows how to direct, knows when to end the episode (it always ends perfectly so that you just can't get enough and watch another episode), know when to add proper music, etc. New director just animated manga pages and called it a day. Worse even, he made changes for the worse (like adding retarded filler episodes, adding recap in episode 13 already, removing some very important scenes like Gon meeting Kaito or sushi exam, etc.).

I think I found the best solution. I have 2 monitors, I watch 99 with sound and I play 11 on the side monitor. I mainly pay attention to the 99 but when there's a fight or something important I watch the original and then re watch it in the remake to get the best of both worlds.

The new animation looks cleaner & modern, but man..
they made Gin Freecs look like a man-child with awkward stubbles. Far from the beast-riding, cool looking Gin we saw in 1999 & who look like a grown-up Gon (which it should be). Also, Nen, the power manifestation in this world should be different than most shonen anime. The new one just made it look like I'm watching a DBZ rip-off.

I'm currently watching the 2011-ep.89, when i finish the hxh 2011 I'm gonna watch the 1999 ones and then the movies. They are all very interesting ngl

I HATE the art style in 2011, so cringe and too freaking ''positive'' and bright. Makes this anime look like a generic 5 years old kids show.

Also, kilua is shorter in 2011 for no reason, and everyone is super slim and weak looking (lack of muscles)

In short, mature art style is always more appealing than the terrible light hearted one.
