Using Putty for Connecting to Cisco Devices

Could I do this in the campus library? Because for some reason, it does not work. It says error in serial device.

akrishananda dude what cable are you using to connect to the cisco router ? I am using a serial cable and i have 2 com ports 4 and 5 but cannot connect ?

In case anyone else is using a USB-to-db9 dongle in Windows (it just works under Ubuntu) and having a problem, these instructions work fine. The one piece that was missing (after installing vendor driver) was I had no "Ports (COM & LPT)" in my Device Manager. I just right-clicked on the name of my computer at the top of the tree and hit "Scan for hardware changes" and Windows XP found everything fine. Was driving me nuts for a few minutes there.
