The guidelines to diagnose and confirm Polycystic Ovaries is by blood test, laboratory investigations and the ultrasound helps in clinching the issue. When these patients come to the outpatient department we do ask them to confirm laboratory wise to confirm that they are PCOS. We send them for a primary pelvic ultrasound scan to find out what is the status of the ovaries and the uterus and the lining of the endometrial cavity. Because they have irregular periods. Because of the hypomenorrhea they have they have cycles that don’t come exactly 28 to 32 days. They get delayed by 10 to 15. At times a month, 2 months, sometimes 4 months . So when the cycles are irregular, we worry about what is the cause behind their irregularity and therefore we do a pelvic scan to find out whether she is pregnant or not firstly and then the status of the ovaries. Normally the ovaries in PCOS patients are very bulky, quite huge, very easily detectable in the ultrasound scan and the classic picture is the presence of small cysts sin the periphery of the ovary which diagnoses the patient to be a PCOS patient. Very easy and very simple to do, non invasive, relatively cheap and you can get a proper diagnosis confirmative to laboratory investigations profile we do for these patents.
