MiSTer FPGA Saturn Core vs Real Sega Saturn Hardware with Daytona USA!

As a Saturn fan, I am increasingly less enthusiastic about FPGA type tech for consoles like the Saturn. The subjective picture quality is just bad, looks even worse on modern display tech "as is", and what's more, we're even getting the "cinematic" 20fps experience of back in the day -- which we could do without even back in the day (even those who preferred the crispier color work of Tomb Raider on the Saturn, preferred the high frame rates of the PS1 version). I much rather see hardware emulation with upscaling, anti-aliasing and advanced shaders for these reasons.

For example, it takes a lot of fiddling around with shaders and upscaling to get games like Lost Vikings 2, Sonic 3D or Sonic R to look just what they subjectively looked like to me on the TV back in 1998. And FPGAs just do not create that picture quality.

Just finished my first Mister build with the Aluminum Armor case, all went great, except I can't insert the sd card without potentially breaking the thing despite using the correct orientation. Is there some kind of trick to it? The secondary slot works just fine.

Well they nailed that appalling pop-in! And that, if we think about it, is an important part of preservation. My memories of the era are those of fast moving polygons, filled with textures, going off into the distance... but that's because I remember 8-bit and 16-bit experiences that chugged at 10fps in monochrome.

I actually find the Saturn core better on my Dell 2007FPb Monitor than my actual Japanese Sega Saturn console! It does help using a vga to vga cable.

I like the colors and brightness of the Mister image but prefer the slightly blurrier Saturn image. I seem to prefer slightly blurry video with 3d consoles.

"SEGA Blue" should be a real color.

I like MisterFPGA so far, but honestly, HDMI is bad on Saturn (and PlayStation) because the CRTs blurred those "grid" shadows on Saturn and the dithering on PlayStation, because SEGA and Sony used the tech of the time to their advantage. Even games like Hardcore 4x4 look better on a CRT due to the abundance of grid effects going on.
Other than that, it's pretty good. I just hope it has analogue video support too before I buy into one.

I love your channel, but I don't think either version looks good. Quite honestly the best version of Daytona USA that I've placed is on the PS3 which is nearly arcade-perfect.

This is exciting seeing this. I have had my Mister for about a week and enjoying arcade games on it. I'll be loading up home console system games this upcoming weekend. Great videos by the way!

On super console X3 plus Sega Saturn games like Daytona USA in 1080 full screen it looks amazing !!!

The aspect ratio seems slightly wrong on FPGA
Draw distance is also ever so slightly better on FPGA

The FPGA version sounds too " bright " or too clear compared to original hardware which sounds bassier/deeper. The original audio was never intended to sound that bright.
This is expected because the Yamaha sound chips of that era worked a certain way and was used in a twisted manner. The same problem also exists on Dreamcast which is funny because someone tried to remake the Dreamcast startup sound by retro engineering the original sound file but when played on any other sound chip it sounds completely wrong.

This is somehow in the same vein as those visual artists of the time who made use of the CRT's artifacts and chromatic aberrations being part of the original aesthetic and would look completely wrong on a clear sharp LCD instead, well, this works the same for 90's era sound chips.

Everything is close enough on the FPGA for me to never notice the differences unless you've done some side by side comparisons like here.
I hope the Sega ST-V is also on the way.

I think this original port is still fine for the most part. Only if the draw distance were a little better.

How about a side by side of Virtua Fighter 2 (or any other 3D fighting game) where timing is crucial.

17th and 18th place? Is there a single type of game where you are not terrible? All the PVMs in the world don't translate to actual video game skills, obviously...

Batsugun is broken in lastest core, lots of graphical glitches.

Rolling demos are the best for accuracy comparisons.

I just got My Fenrir ODE with the Saturn Switch installed and I’m stoked to compare real hardware to my Mister!

Hdmi car looks ever so slightly taller/squashed when the same view is used. Possibly a result from upscaling. The back window caught my attention first, looked taller in hdmi. Other than thst it looks impressive!

Dinosaur Canyon is my first love of Saturn.
