I know I’m drastically late but I think the idea was Zeus trying to weasel his way out of what’s happening, “apologizing” to Kratos and asking him to let him go

Just as Promotheus asked Kratos to release him from torment by killing him, so Zeus too asked Kratos to release him from evil which infected him by killing him

I mean him imprisoning the Titans assign understandable since the Titans we're still loyal to his father chronos. There's literally a scene of them I thinking God of War 1 or 2 of them fighting by Chronos Side in the Great War. I'm not exactly sure why he imprisoned Gaia.

I hope the evil spirit didn't possess atreus. Remember, arteus started hearing voices, and he said it felt evil. Then that point on, he started to act evil and killed Móði. What if that evil spirit hitched a ride around Kratos and possessed atreus during their journeys together.

I like, even more, that much of his strength came from his loved ones, entombed on his skin, who still loved him despite his betrayal.

A not so insignificant part of me wished that they would be released in the same place Faye wanted to be taken, which was a large part of why she wanted her ashes to be released on that mountain.

That Kratos would be liberated from that curse, or that he would feel liberated without having to see his pale skin anymore. That he would see some misty vision in the ashes of Faye, and his Greek family, stepping towards the afterlife together (just a vision, anyway)

We, the players, had to maintain the aggression or sense of justice to ensure that Zeus's death was warranted. Otherwise, we'd have the same sense of guilt as other acts like from COD MW2 "No Russian"......

I believe Zeus will return. He said that he was sorry. He noticed Kratos in hellhiem. I believe If the heart of Zeus is now weighed by the scales of let’s see Anubis, after the evil spirit is gone out of him it might play a role in the release of Zeus from hell & also bring together the pieces of the mural of Kratos being golden & becoming the ruler of Olympus. The evil spirit said to Kratos not Zeus himself that he wouldn’t be the ruler of Olympus. So in order for zeus to even mention such a thing to Kratos, I suspect that Zeus is going to be around. And it would be something if the people don’t believe that Kratos has changed in Sparta. And that Kratos doesn’t believe that Zeus has changed. Aries is under ice. Could a relative or a group of dedicated soldiers of Aries find away to bring him back? Well I’m out. Hey Cap! 💪🏽

The answer is simple. The evil spirits travelled West, towards the Italian peninsula. Over there it possessed the original Roman gods and made them obsessed with Greece (as the evil spirits are originally from Greece and are most familiar with Greek gods). Slowly but surely, the Roman gods memories and personality is changed until they fully act and think that they are the original Greek gods. They even order the conquest of the Greek world and bring back order to the lawlessness of that realm after the chaos brought forth by Kratos.

When Kratos reaches the Roman civilization, he is confused as it seems that the Greek pantheon he killed has resurrected somehow and renamed themselves as Jupiter(Zeus), Minerva(Athena) etc. The Roman gods think their killer has returned and seek revenge. Kratos allies with uncorupted OG Roman gods and realises what happened. Instead of killing the "Greek" pantheon again, he will this time atone for his past crimes and seek to free the possessed Romans from the evil spirits that he himself freed back in GoW1 and GoW3. Kratos fixes his mistake and saves the Roman world pantheon. (At the end they remember their original selves but now have the new Greek personality fused with them)

This concept keeps intact the fact the actual Romans just copied and pasted the Greek pantheon. And it allows Kratos to literally revisit his greatest regret (destruction of Greece) without having to go back to Greece itself. The possessed Roman gods look and act just like their Greek original copies. Redemption is a key theme here and a small nostalgia bait.

Zeus was too much of an a-hole to ever apologize. His arrogance was always his greatest flaw. Zeus deserved what he got. Unfortunately in this version of the mythos, all the Greek Gods are mad.

Over a decade after one of my favorite story arcs concludes, and the generation that proceeds me thinks there's a theory to this?

Go play the games...

Spoiler;
When Kratos opened Pandora's box, fear was let out along with hope. Basically, mortal emotions where unleashed on the gods.

Zeus apologized because he saw that he was consumed by fear, and it's what lead him to take all the actions he did against Kratos. (Time travel/sisters of fate really makes a mess of a point a to b journey.)

At the end, we see Zeus turn into a wraith. Wraths are spirits who never make it to the underworld, bound by emotions. Ofc, it could also be because the underworld's ruler was dethroned.

I would have liked that, that would have been a nice touch.

I do agree Zeus is a shit bag, and likely would not apologize, but it would have been an interesting thing to have happen. Like all the fear being released Zeus finally sees what a bastard he was and apologizes for it.
