i always thought the portal games were full of liminal spaces, especially the ending scene of the first game. i guess some of it is intended in that the whole plot is that there used to be people working there that all died suddenly and at the same time, but many of the structures just expand seemingly infinitely into the void and reach that liminal space of like, people built these??

just a few months ago, i lost my wallet in an arcade. in order to find it, i had to go into a laser tag arena while there wasn't a game going on. fricking. liminal.

I think the reason american liminal spaces stand out is because of how devoid of humanity they seem. Like the russian ones felt like lived in spaces and the older architecture felt more humane and natural. Meanwhile the american ones especially focus on that 60s-70s time when everything has a sort of eerie vibe when taken out of context and viewed without any humans. The whole colorful carpets and walls, the harsh geometry without any embellishments, the glarish flourescent lighting really makes it seem like the anti of a natural space which would never make us feel uncomfortable like this. They are old but there's almost never any signs of ageing that would indicate it has been well used. The use of concrete and such materials consolidate that even more.

I always walk my dog late in the evening coz thats the only time that I can walk her. I live in a very low dencety place so I encounter a lot of liminal spaces when im walking. Usually its an empty street with lights going somewhere too far for me to see. I always take photos of those and show it to my friends

Recently I was in a back section of a very large mall, a place I could always remember but never put a finger on where I had seen it, since I had been there when I was much younger. I had believed it was in another country or something. As the mall began to close, I was walking through it with all of the lights on and the calming mall music but no people on any of the balconies or floors. It covered many of the points you mentioned, the strange lighting for an empty place, the lack of people, the nostalgic music and setting

It's extremely easy to implant a false memory in someone else's mind. The other day my partner said something to me that I misinterpreted and I immediately formed a false memory. She was talking about something she and a friend did in the past, but I "remembered" being there. Even being aware of this phenomenon and having read about it quite a bit it still happened to me.

I think the reason these pictures look so familiar is because some of them are from movies or TV shows with the characters, furniture and everyday objects Photoshopped out. The thumbnail of that room, looks a bit familiar...doesn't it? I think I know where that is from

When I was growing up, my dad was in the military, meaning we had to move house every other year or so. The eerie state of the houses once everything was packed and the house was empty, was definitely liminal, the shitty wallpaper, bathrooms and carpets. I think most people who grew up in UK military housing could relate

Ive always found the artist Edward Hoppers paintings to be very liminal, even thought hey have people. I think its because the people seem to exist in isolation to each other, in cold and joyless environments.

I can't be the only one that feels a sense of comfort from the look and feel of the backrooms? It reminds me of an old 90's carpet or rug store. They just went on and on forever.

I remember being a kid when my local Kmart was closing down. I started randomly walking around the store and came across a section that was curtained off. When I peaked through, what I saw kinda just stopped me. This section of the store seemed almost endless, not a single person in sight, no shelves, no art on the wall, nothing. It made me feel nostalgic for when I first went into the store and experienced it for the first time, but it was also very uncanny. Just behind me, the store was very active with people and music, but in front of me, it’s like the store was dead, and I was mourning a friend I didn’t entirely know. I’ll never forget that uncanny feeling of seemingly slipping out of reality for a few moments.

the weirdest part for me personally is that I feel nostalgic for a lot of these images although I don't live in the US. As u said, a lot of these places are taco bells, targets, those weird fast food places with puppets and American neighbourhoods with detached houses and square gardens. all of which we don't have in the UK or our versions look very different. I've tried searching UK liminal spaces but they never have the same nostalgic feeling even though they're definitely more accurate to my childhood lol

i think its even more simple than this. when we picture ourselves in a liminal space, we think two things: 1. "I cant stay here" 2. "Theres no where to go". Its just the fear of being lost with an added layer of uncanny nostalgia.

Dare I say, the least talked about liminal space, is from the TV series, Fringe.

The old man takes his camera, follows specific steps, and ends up essentially going through a crack in reality into a parallel world that is quite... Off.

I experienced a liminal space just after watching the new Blade Runner movie. During the fight scene at the abandoned casino, the holographic projector turns on and starts playing glitched out visuals and sound. It’s super disorienting.

The theater I watched Blade Runner at was connected to a mall. The movie ended sometime after 11:00 PM. Thankfully, the doors to the mall were still open to allow those of us who parked in the parking lot opposite the theater a safe space to walk through so we could reach our cars safely.

The lighting of the hallways inside the mall was dimmed to just barely visible. Elevator music played through the speakers as you would expect during operating hours. However, something was off about the music in this mall. The music player was busted and was left playing glitchy music. No one was walking the hallways but myself and one or two other people. It was VERY surreal, because the music should be playing correctly, and it should be playing for people. No one was present to hear it being played. It was as if I had stepped into the dystopian world I had just left behind a few moments ago at the show: Blade Runner.

It was wonderful, and I felt grateful/blessed to have had an experience like that. 🫠
