They help ease recoil, but how? Check out this gun science explanation with slow-mo video to back it up.

When I added a brake to my 16" AR-10, it drastically improved the recoil, but the gas system got all screwed up... I had to experiment with all kinds of buffers, springs, adjustable gas block and even opened up the gas port a bit...
Before the muzzle brake, my ar10 was tuned perfectly with a YHM flash hider. But, it kicked like a mule . The new muzzle brake helped the recoil, but, at a detrimental cost- even with the adjustable gas block fully open, it couldn't get enough gas to cycle.. I couldn't believe it. Somehow that brake was so powerful, it changed the way the entire gas system performed... so, I opened the port to the next size up, then it was way over gassed! So, I installed a heavier 5.6 oz buffer weight, and it cycles better, but now my Superlative arms adjustable gas block is in the fully open bleedoff mode, and I'm still getting a solid 3 o'clock ejection pattern... the gun still seems overgassed... I'm thinking about a heavier buffer spring, but I don't want the accompanying increased bolt speed back to battery....
Maybe I need to go even heavier with the buffer weight....

Great video, my only request would've been to do a comparison with a rifle without a muzzle break to show the difference in recoil.

I'm still not sure why it reduces recoil: if yo remove the brake completely, the gas can still goes side ways, the brake is not the reason gas go side ways, adding a brake only prevents the gas from going up or down.

Gas venting out the brake ports happens before the bullet actually exits the brake. The bullet itself acts like a seal until the bullet leaves the brake. Only ports available to release pressure are lateral ports until the bullet completely leaves the brake. Obviously there's small clearances around the diameter of the bullet because the brake isn't identical to barrel porting. I would guess the longer the brake and the more ports, the less gas jets forward.

So building your own as long as you have the right tooling shouldn't be that difficult. So you can either cut one out of a billet piece or make two halves and sandwich them together. Looks like a standard endmill could be used the cut the fluting in the sides. Use a lathe or tap to cut the threads and use either the mill or lathe to drill and ream the center hole. Yeah that seems doable. For the average Joe probably cheaper and easier to buy one but since I have the tooling I'm going to go ahead and try to make one. The trickiest part to me seems to be making sure your brake isn't in the bullets path but then again if you go 30 thousandths over that shouldn't be that hard. Anyone know how close the brake is to the bullet's diameter? If so I would appreciate that info.

Depending on the powder to bullet weight ratio you can virtually get 100% recoil reduction. Browning actually got his brake to pull the heavy machinegun forward!

The braking action actually starts before the propellant gasses ever make it to the first baffle of the brake. The air in front of the bullet hits the baffles of the brake before anything else causing the same effect as the gasses from the burning/ed powder.
