CORRECTION: The illustration I made depicting Richard the II was accidentally based on a painting of Richard III, my mistake. Thank you to those who pointed it out to me.

While hanging out around a swimming pool in a Palm Springs resort, I met a fellow once who told me he had an inherited British title and was about 1200th in line for the throne. He said however all 1200 would have to die at the same time for him to become the king of England.

It would have been nice if the titles have some kind of a prefix if not suffix to make things a little bit simpler, such as arch.

Bishop and Archbishop or Angel and Archangel kinda gives a bit of an idea that one is higher than the other. Although King and High King could also mean that the latter is currently under the effects of a drug.

Once you mix in Eastern European states it becomes even worse. Knyaz, Grand Knyaz, Tsar, Despot, Komit, Vojvoda. And the ERE(Byzantium) is just something else.

And then come the Turkic Tribes and Islamic states

In Poland nobility didn't have tittles. The only ones with tittles in prepartition era had been descendants of the old eastern rulling famillies, which were allowed to have a tittle of książę/kniaź roughly duke/prince (because in Polish there is no difference).

Please do a video on African Kings and Queens. I don’t think the western countries know how brutal they were and what they did to their own tribes. Example: African Kings many times outlawed relationships for any man under them unless he allowed them. African Kings often kept most of the tribeswomen for themselves unless he found one ugly or he found them sterile which he then would allow them to marry. Some tribes only had 1 or 2 men who were allowed to marry.

IIRC, they rank over all the other peers.

My ancestors were the first Barons of Craigie (Dundee, Scotland) Patrick Kyd and James Kyd from 1666-1728 before selling the land to the Guthrie's. Scotland has an amazing history and as it's a small nation it's amazing what you can find with a little digging.

Raised in West Texas, and the South in the U.S. had a lot of Scotch Irish, Ulster Scots, started coming into the America's about 1720, intelligent, hard workers, not afraid to fight, type people. We, as a people in West Texas, used to say - I need to go take a duke, or I need to take a dukie. Obviously, among themselves, they did not like being ruled over, by weaklings which most nobility were - sit on their butt while the peasants worked their land, for survival wages. God, look at their faces of the English nobility - not so different than a lot of politicans today. I read where Bill Gates is the largest landowner in America - what do you think he thinks the future is? What about the agents out here in West Texas using drug money, cartel money, to buy up farm land at outrageous prices, what do you think they think the future is? How about zuckerberg and bezos acquiring farmland? Why? Well, my peon-peasant brain gets tired easy, asking to many hard questions - I was bred to work physical labor, for people better than me - time to go take a duke and go to bed............

Similar thing in Tigray. But even more confusing since most of the time the emperors of Abbysinia were figure heads.
There's the Niguse negest(literally king of kings) then there is the Ras bitweded(the Vice ruler sometimes, the prime minister...) Then there are the negus(kings of the various kingdoms) who are equal in power to the various Ras(higher than Dejazmatch, maybe an archduke??, but the title is missing in Europe) of the country and in some cases the Dejazmatch(similiar to duke or earl). Then there are the Dejazmatch i mentioned earlier, they rule various territories that can range from kingdoms the size of England to cities, then there are the various lower lords.

As much as the pun between a ‘count’ and a ‘count-minus-o’ may sound funnily convincing as to why the British have stuck to their native word ‘earl’, I guess there is a much simpler explanation: ‘earl’ had been in use in English long before the Normans conquered England and spread Norman French as the language of the nobility.
So, while the other terms, including the female variants, were adopted by the local language without opposition because they filled up a lexical void, the already existing ‘earl’ resisted extirpation and stood the test of time.

Hey I’m a member of the Danish nobility & in a titular sense of the Holy Roman Empire, a baron & also a equilivent to baron using another term. It means every time I have to give my name I have to spell it out & mention the von ‘with the small ‘v’’.Plus when they ask for my full name I have to mention or write out way too many middle names too. It’s bloody annoying opening a back account or renewing my driver’s license. I did inherit a gold signet ring with my coat of arms though, plus in Germany, where they love titles of any sort, I’d get quite a bit of money from a marriage contract if I got around to it. Mentioning this here in Oz, say in some pub, usually gets a response like ‘what’s this drunk bullshiting on about?’ No one here in Oz seems to know the significance of ‘von’ other than people here from Germany or Scandinavia, but that’s ok it’s really a bit of a wank these days.
