This is a great way to look at it because I’m just lost on how to think about it.

I worry that just because a young girl hates dresses could be told it means more. Not Letting them find their own way to their feelings. No one should enter with suggestions. Being different is not harm.

I was a ton-boy. Didn’t carry a purse, didn’t wear makeup, climbed fences and wanted to be an architect. None of that feed into who I was attracted to. I liked boys and not doing girly things kept me from getting them early on but by college boys loved me being one of the guys. And dates started. I never was told to question my sexuality.

I was a little surprised by the video. I'd heard Judith Butler's name in relation to current gender thinking. But here she actually moves in a different direction and says gender is socially created and reinforced rather than being something internal that one inherently understands.

My biggest issue with the idea of performative behaviour being the key driver of gender, is that humans have evolved from animals. In other mammalian species we see animals behaving in a way which is determined by sex. Male rabbits are not bullied by rabbit warren societies into behaving as male rabbits; likewise females. They do what comes naturally. Now some will say this is an absurd analogy, but biological sex for humans surely cannot be dismissed as entirely irrelevant - to do so would be to say that our natural evolution as a species plays no part.

as a lifelong masculine woman that regularly dances between dressing feminine and masculine (like most women), i seriously do not believe this. even in my most masculine energy, i have always felt like a woman. it wasn’t learned, it was innate. and if it was learned, that’s like saying cats only know how to be cats because they take example from other cats. have them be raised by another animal and they’d behave like that animal. okay, true….they’re still a cat though, with mostly catlike characteristics! does this make sense?

She's conflating gender with gender roles and societal norms around gender.
The solution to accepting people who don't live up to those roles and norms is to accept people as individuals - NOT to abolish the concepts of man and woman and start putting everybody into boxes of invented genders and pitting them against each other with identity politics.

If someone don't behave as the stereotypical man or woman / boy or girl, then just meet them as individuals an move on as long as they do the same to you... drop all this postmodern group-think nonsense.

I don't think gender is a social construct. For me it always has been a biological construct and will be. Social stereotypes can exist though.I think at the end , culture and society has celebrated all the three genders - male, female and transgender. I think we should feel proud about our own gender in which we are born in rather than try to behave like another gender.

I am inclined to agree with Butler. Sex and gender are not the same thing. We are born either male or female - this is our sex, but our gender, which is a social construct, is determined by our ongoing behaviours. What seems to have occurred, is, the gender 'man/he/him' has become associated/synonymous with male, and 'woman/she/her' with female, and because males and females are biologically, psychologically, behaviourally, and socially different, men are expected to behave like males, and women are expected to behave like females. I imagine the reason for this is so at a glance (without the need to enquire) we know who is male and who is female. Rather than inventing further genders, perhaps it makes more sense to terminate all genders... dress and behave how we want, be attracted to whomever we are, and if it is procreation which we seek, ask the other's sex. 🙂

I think it's ironic that she jumps to the conclusion that any social pressures enforcing gender norms should be seen as bullying, an impingement of freedom or are somehow inherently negative because they may become 'violent.' Exactly what you would expect from a woman who would want to mother the world with her philosophy 😆

This theory seems like a riff off of Simone de Beauvoir who said "one isn't born a woman, one becomes a woman, which was a commentary on how society at the time imposed precise gender roles on to women (i.e. motherhood/wife) and, as woman adopted these roles, they fulfilled societal expectations of what a woman is. Classic feminists have fought to get rid of prescribed gender roles so people of both sexes have choices. Gender ideology is an abomination of this as it clings to, and reinforces gender roles.

Just because you wish something is true (because it makes you personally comfortable) doesn't mean it is. I'm what they call a tomboy, lots of my friends are the same. There is nothing difficult about "living this way" - lol. Her progressive theory is so outdated.
