Correction: As a native of Uganda, I am grateful that the cost of living is reasonable, but I am afraid you have got one of the official languages of the country wrong. English it is but not Swahili by any chance. Swahili has been rejected in Uganda for more than 100 years! It is not one of our indigenous languages, never has been, and never will be. Hardly anyone speaks Swahili in Uganda, even though the dictatorial regime in Uganda would like to impose it upon us by force. We are going to fight tooth and nail to remove it from our school curriculum. We don't see any reason why we should adopt two foreign languages at the expense of our indigenous languages.

On the other hand, Luganda, which is the most widely spoken indigenous language of Uganda by an estimated 75% to 80% of the population, has inevitably been elevated to national language status. The regime has also conceded that it should be taught widely in our schools and universities. This is resented by the rest of the country, whose indigenous languages are not as popular as Luganda. But they have no one to blame since Luganda has organically become the lingua franca of the country and the language of commerce as well as entertainment; largely through the hard work of the Baganda linguists going way back to the beginning of the 20th century.

Therefore, declaring Swahili to be one of the national languages of Uganda does not make it so. Nor does it mean that we are about to make it our own, its popularity in the neighbouring countries notwithstanding.

Would you believe it if I told you that hardly anyone speaks Swahili in Uganda? As a native of Uganda, I should know. Many visitors have been told that the language is spoken there because our neighbours in Kenya and Tanzania have adopted it as their official language and so the regime in Uganda today is trying to follow suit, even though they are aware that the language has been rejected in Uganda for more than 100 years! By the regime in power maintaining that Swahili is one of our official languages, does not make it so. Instead of adopting our indigenous languages, which Swahili is not, the regime wants to impose upon us yet another foreign language in addition to English, which remains the official language and not Swahili.

You see, Luganda, which is the indigenous language of the majority Baganda (plural) with a population of approximately 12 million, is the most popular indigenous language in the country and widely spoken by an estimated 75% of the population of Uganda. It has organically become the lingua franca of Uganda - the language of commerce, entertainment and so on. This is resented by the rest of the population who are not Baganda and so the fight is on to prevent the Luganda language from being adopted as one of the official languages and possibly as a replacement of English in the future. The regime, which is headed by a non-Muganda (singular) dictator, has gone to the extent of making it mandatory in our primary schools, which is not popular at all and will most likely be rejected when the regime has been kicked out. So, it is necessary to point out to anyone reading this that, Swahili is not an official language of Uganda, since hardly anyone of us speaks it, having been rejected for over a century ago.
