It's powerful for the same reason a spear is.

Not including the reach, you can put all your body weight and forward momentum behind a thrust, you cant do that nearly as well with a slash. Its all torque and horizontal momentum instead.

Thrusts are MUCH more powerful, so they can do a lot more damage.
