Skil vs DeWALT || Side By Side Comparison

Unless you intend to learn sign language I recommend you break the habit of all the poking taping and hand waving. Since you’re camera is so close to the object you’re filming you end up blocking the view unnecessarily. Also it’s annoying and makes you look kind of stupid

Anyone happen to know what type of material (metal, plastic)l the rack and pinion gears are made of for each of these products? Metal, plastic?

Great comparison. I decided on the Skil because I have limited space in my garage/workshop and secondly because of price. I bought it at my local Menards at an special offer price of $279. As jerrywilson6770 outlines below for the price the Skil is a great DIY saw with intriguing features e.g precise rack&pinion fence setting, easy blade adjaustability. And I can confirm: It was “bang-on square out of the box”.To store it I fold the stand and place the saw on a plywood platform with casters and roll it away. Easy. The Diablo 50 teeth combo blade which I added gets my rip and cross cuts done easy and clean. I have plans for a folding/removable out-feed table and a simple cross cut sled. I am very happy with this little saw.

Saw this review and others and decided and purchased myself the Skilsaw. Skilsaw updated this version. The knife guide is now removable. The plastic insert guide is now aluminum. The small fence is now locked in place and doesn’t flop around.

The Bosch table saw stand with the large wheels from a few years ago is really cool too, But very large compared to most. Just step down on the stand point and it transforms into a stable stand.

Skilsaw is a total junk. If you think buying one, stop right here. Unless you rip fence pickets, it’s not for you. Major problems: Fence is not square to table about 0.5~0.7 mainly because of aluminum fitted on a cheap plastic holders, blade insert is piece of powdered aluminum which impossible to adjust, rack and pinion is hard to move and it’s annoying, push stick made from hard plastic which will tear apart if it even hits the blade, and finally - The Table is not flat at all - 0.8~1.0 apart at different spots!, especially at the blade opening. The only good thing about this saw is built in sturdy legs. They could make a very nice saw if they could address these issues. Of course you can grind the table, use aftermarket stick, sand down fence holders and bring it to working condition, but would you want to do it at $300?

I have an old makita portable table saw and wanted to upgrade before the proposed govt saw safety regulations take effect. As much as I thought I would be going with the Dewalt, I think the weight, size and price would be overkill for my purposes. The smaller sized Skil at less than half the price just makes the most sense. But I'll probably regret it😅

Comparative reviews are my favorite. You did a superb job on this one. I'm quite value driven so that would drive my choice provided that the quality and features were comparable. I'm looking for another tablesaw in case the Consumer Product Safety folks decide to kill off affordable portable tablesaws. Thanks for the video.

I have the Skil for about 2 years now and while I am overall happy with it, I can confirm it's 2 major issues. 1. The throat plate is plastic crap that flexes like a piece of licorice. I made my own including a zero clearance out of hard maple. 2. The riving knife... I took it out, cut a chunk out of the bottom with a dremel so I can just slide it out now when I need to do dados. It's super loud and I already have tinnitus so I always wear ear protection.

Thanks for the side by side comparison. I thought I wanted the Skill after watching this. So I went to the store and compared the feel and found the skill to be a bit flimsy. I ended up with the Dewalt 7485. It is a good table saw for the money and I love the fence and how the saw works. Thanks!

Something I noticed when I was at my preferred Lowe's Home Improvement,(because, before this past Thanksgiving 2023, I was doing my own comparisons.😎) Upon reading the spec's, I seen the DeWalt DES7492(I think that's an older model? Because what they have on line now is the DES7491 or something, or maybe the 7491 is older?) takes a 250mm which isn't a true 10"(254mm), which is what the SKIL TS6307-00 comes with. I'm 5'10" and the height of either saw is okay for me. I enjoyed your video. I'm thankful for your hands-on experience with both saws, something I don't have.🤓.
I'm leaning towards the SKIL, because at the moment, I don't foresee a true need for the larger DeWalt, and truth be told, if I had the extra coin for DeWalt, I'd buy the larger SKIL SPT99-11 any ways, cause seems like a better saw than the DeWalt. Those HUGE wheels makes it easier to roll over stuff.

I wish I had seen your vid comparing the two. You did not mention the motors, are they the same?

Skil like Black and Decker (now DeWalt) had bad names in Australia but seems times have changed and both brands have, by way of parent companies, lifted their game. Good stuff!

I unboxed my Skil jobsite saw yesterday and Skil has made a few improvements. The throat plate is now aluminum instead of plastic and the riving knife is now removable. The blade guard also has a built-in riving knife and can be swapped out with the standard riving knife quickly.

Great video! I decided to go with the DeWALT. I feel the stronger frame and stronger overall metal components build would take more abuse and have less chance of tipping when ripping. I also upgraded the miter to a DeWALT steel one. The DeWALT will still fit the same 2.5' space I have allotted for a table saw in my small shed and would be better to roll out to make cuts out from the shed, and I can roll it around to my garage to make cuts there as well. This saw replaced a Sears Radial Arm saw that took up too much space and wasn't portable.

Good to know the Skil can be used with legs folded on a bench top. That was the final question i needed answered before pulling the trigger on the Skil. Thanks for taking the time to share!

You dont have to bend down to close the bottom legs. Just use your foot on the leg handle. It works great.

I just got the skil for Christmas and I guess they upgraded it because my throat plate is metal and the blade guard has an integrated riving knife on it but love your videos. Helped me figure out how to set it up and adjust it.

I've had the DeWalt for around 4 years, and I'm very happy with it. It seemed ok straight out of the box. I haven't tried any other table saw, so I'm unable to comment regarding those..... I bought the DeWalt dedicated trolley/stand at the same time as the saw, and that too is excellent..... DeWalt isn't the cheapest, but the quality is there.....

Yes the dewalt is better but is also 300 bucks more for 350 ill take the skill great for a DIYer

Dewalt for me...better looking, consistant performance through out life of the saw. Just me :)

I just bought the skil at M for 269, but it has the plastic throat plate, not the newer metal one.

I just ordered the skil one a few days ago and i cant wait to get it. For me, bang for the buck was why i made the coice i did. The skil was quite a bit cheaper, more compact and pretty much all the same features as the dewalt. I just use this stuff around the house so i dont need anything gigantic or heavy. Saving space is always a good feature for me as well. Ive always loved my skil tools AND my older dewalt tools are still running strong even tho theyre 20 years old or more. I also recently got the skil compound sliding miter saw and i absolutely love it. Ive got a good amount of use out of it already and my skil circular saw. Im trying to get into building nicer shelves and stuff so i wanted a good table saw for my projects. Thank you for the videos!

On the DeWalt stand you can use your feet to fold the legs close to the floor, you don't need to bend over.

Miter gauge is piece of garbage until you find yourself without miter saw. It is like the spare wheel, Peice of garbage but solve a problem

I recently purchased the Skil table saw and I couldn't be happier. Light, compact, fits in my limited space and cuts everything I ask of it. Gotta say, it was bang-on square out of the box, which I didn't expect. And, when needed, the calibrations are pretty easy. (BTW, you can remove the writhing knife; just keep pulling.) Get a better saw blade, of course, to level up the cut quality. If you watch, it can still be found for as little as $300. Great for beginners, or any place where space is at a premium. Ok the question that makes a difference. Is the skill looks like it has more distance from the in feed. Can you see of they are the same or if the skill has more in feed distance to the blade?

Granted the Dewalt comes off a nicer and outscores the Skill but the Dewalt is $699 whereas the Skill is only $299. Not exactly Apples to Apples but a great comparison review nonetheless!

Question.....What about if i need the push stick before " moving this thing out if the way"?

I just picked up the Skil and have an update for you- the throat plate is now metal and is cut all the way through to the back, just like the DeWalt. The riving knife is no longer adjustable height- it's basically the same knife as is integral to the blade guard, just without the guard. You can also stow the fence under the table for transport, which might mitigate any problems with the fence latch. I'm just using it as a DIYer in my garage, so that's not really an issue for me.
I never knew about the benchtop option with folded legs- that's good to know, I'll check it out.
Given the price difference and size, the Skil was the winner for me.

Very limited space Skil all the way. And the price.... Hard to beat that.

No mention of the power of the motor, are the same? This is a major issue when working.

Nice comparison and after watching this I think I've made up my mind. Locally there's a vintage 1972 Delta table saw for sale for $200 near me and while it isn't portable it is a solid machine and as I'm just a DIY homeowner I think it will fill my needs better than either of those modern ones. The Delta's fence, while needing bumping to set it where needed is just so much more solid and inflexible compared to these. Of course, I'll tear it all down and restore it as it's missing some paint and I'll polish the tables as they look a bit dark, but in the end except for not being portable it looks like it will outclass either of those in every way I can imagine with the exception of not having the smoky plastic guard that sits over the blade. It also has a solid miter gauge that's all metal.

Skill looks great but DeWalt is real world and can cut a lot larger sets of wider wood and need at least 30 inches of table trust me

I think biggest complaint I heard for the skill is the motor brake is non existent. I’m a first time table saw purchaser and these are the two I’m stuck between. In my head ok have lots of projects but in real world the skill is probably more than enough

I’d like to know, the plastic 2 piece of crap you were talking about….which one WIGGLES around the least, cuz you know that’s accuracy in your cross cut??? I m figuring the Dewalt has a tighter fit….cuz for what I do I won’t use any sleds. Please if you don’t mind let me know ok and thanks. Paul

DeWalt is $550, SKIL is $390 but it is only $299 at Walmart, I just purchased it.

Great review!! I really was sold on the DeWalt until I found that Menards carries the Skil for $300 plus $33 off with their 11% rebate for a total of $267. I was trying so hard but I just can't justify more than 2x the price of the $550 Dewalt now.

Can you do a video on how to swap out the blade on the Skil?
