She didn't express it, but I suspect when she mentioned a section of the population being alienated by progressive change, she meant that progressive change, the left, has become so identified with identity politics and cultural issues that the poor, the "working class", feel alienated and no longer feel represented by the left. In many countries now you see that section of the population, which was traditionally the bastion of the left, now supporting populists of the right and the left increasingly becoming entrenched among the middle class. I differ with Tharoor and all those who have similar views. What made you become slave to a small nation with both area and population less than us. Simply we were 56 kingdoms fighting between each other and traitors to one another.
