To be honest, it could’ve just been her mother possessing her the entire time we don’t even know if half of that was her

This was actually originally gonna be the plan. Dreamworks was originally gonna make chelsea and nerissa 2 separate people, and chelsea was actually gonna have a mom. But they thought it would be really cool if they gave us the plot twist that chelsea doesn't have a mom, and she pretended to be a teen named chelsea the entire time, only to be revealed as queen nerissa. This is the thing that really shocked me when I watched the movie in theaters. And it was really cool. But part of me still wishes they went with their original idea.

Just imagine if ruby had to fight chelsea's mom (because of the war between the krakens and the mermaids), and then chelsea tries to stop her because she actually developed a real friendship with ruby. But then nerissa, only caring about herself and wanting to kill all the krakens with the trident, pushes poor chelsea, telling her "you are the most pathetic excuse for a daughter! I can't believe you actually became friends with a kraken! Get out of my way, daughter! I'll kill this kraken myself!" She would push her daughter to the ground, making her cry, and making her realize that her mother is a cruel, heartless monster who only cares about herself. After that, I imagine chelsea deciding to help ruby defeat her own mother, sealing the trust and bond between her and ruby, and finally ending the war. And maybe ruby's family can adopt chelsea after they defeat nerissa? That would've been a nice ending.

But the only thing i can say is that DreamWorks had to change it cuz in one of those videos teenage kraken did copy luca and turning red so thats why they cut that scene off of the movie. hope it helps😁.

There is probably a theory about this but I can clarify in one of the scenes it says nerrisa never had a daughter

In the original version, Chelsea really was Nerissa's daughter and she still betrayed Ruby, but to avenge her mother's death at the hands of Agatha during the Kraken-Mermaid War. I don't know why this idea was scrapped, it would be great for the plot.

This isn't really a what if, its literally just the misdirection of the actual movie.

Here’s an unpopular theory: The trident made Chelsea evil & basically transform into nerissa. Because when she got it taken away from her she became Chelsea again and acted all innocent. And she could never hurt a fly when she was Chelsea!

Chelsea did say “there is no Chelsea” but that was when she had the trident. She could of been brainwashed and manipulated by Nerissa so she could trick everyone that she was nerissa. No she was not her daughter, but just a “regular” mermaid!
