Well, this MIGHT help me in my newest project idea... I have a zippered hoodie I absofreakinglutely love that came from a wonderful event, but it's developed holes in it down low, near the bottom cuff/band/whatever it's called.

I bought a slightly larger zippered hoodie that I want to use to add to the bottom of the damaged one, and make it as long as I can from the material available, basically turning it into a hoodie/duster. I'm now wondering if the sleeves can be removed & added to the seam below where they were, to add even more flaring to the bottom.

Anyway, I know this is an old video, but anyone that sees this can certainly wish me luck, LOL!

Oh thank you for this!! Exactly what I want to do as a beginner!
I'm 65yrs old and I find it difficult to find clothes that really fits
me, except for a few that |I have and I have been looking around
for at least a pattern that can replicate the clothes that I already
have.
I love the A line cut on my tops that can hide my belly and
I love wearing wide leg shorts. Now you gave me a very good idea
to resolve my problems with clothing! Thank you so much! and be
looking forward to watching more of your videos! Kuddos to you Wendy!

So much Work! I deconstruct pieces and resew from previous garments like this:

1. wash
2. dry
3. unstitch origional garment
4. steam press with iron
5. spray starch and lable pieces with marker or iron on patch
6. take new fabric
7. wash, dry, steam press
8. lay out template pieces cut with 1/2 inch extra for French seam, or exact provided seams in origional are in tact.
9. Baste stitch together
10. try on, make adjustments if necessary
11. steam seams
12. final top stitch
13. Steam press compleated garment.
14. Keeping a notebook helps

and side note: if I am adjusting or changing the design, rather than draw with dots and a pencil I use chalk or a tracing wheel.
These temlates are easy to store and use again & mix and match. I give my grandmother credit for both teaching me to sew as a child and this technique. During the Depression and WWII paterns were hard to get and or pricey.

I don't know why I'm here. I write, paint, draw, photograph, garden, cook, sing, play guitar--and now I'm like, "Why focus just on those when I can keep expanding my horizons? Next up on the self-sufficiency sub-set of hobbies: making my own clothes." (Which I've done before in 4-H as a kid, never seriously, but always wanted to.) Maybe I feel this way because I look at my high school clothing finally getting beyond what a little patching up can do, and I don't want to shop for the ONE thing that fits well and has a simple style, or a classier look when I all I can find is frilly...or deep colors when it's fashionable to have beige and gray. Or...oh, I just remembered I just inherited and got fixed a good sewing machine. Hadn't had one in ages--cheap new ones break easily. This one is an ancient honker.

Im very beginner to sewing so not sure how to word this, but is there any way to make a pattern(clone) a dress that had multiple seams without taking it apart? Like the bust is a separate part, the shoulders are as well.. all sewn together or does this really only work for the simpler garments? I would like to clone a dress without taking it apart but not sure how

Thanks so much for this!! I have an uncommon body shape and size. All my life I’ve had trouble finding clothes that fit me well. When I find something that does, I try to buy extras and every color available, but sometimes clothes are discontinued. I have made several pairs of scrubs now that I just love!! Everyone asks me where i got them because I use fabrics that are not found in any uniform shops clothes!!
Rocking my wardrobe in 2023! Now I’m repurposing all the clothes in my closet that never really fit me. Ive made some rag rugs, placemates and beautiful tote bags out of shirts that I bought just hoping they would somehow fit me. Subscribed!!

This method only works for most basic of garments. If you want to create pattern from existing real clothing you actually need to rip all the seams, learn about draping, gathering and darts. It's not a rocket science but let's be honest here - after sewing 4 t-shirts you can practically draw pattern from your memory.

I love how you have made it look so easy. I really want to make my own clothes and I have so much fabric for recycling, but using commercial patterns is sometimes not really that simple. Using what we already have that fits well is genius. Your method is very clear and inspiring ! 😁💖Thank you so much for sharing this vidéo. 🤗🙏 I watched many of your videos a long time ago and thought I had subscribed, but no ! So I am now subscribed to your channel ☺

So, would the armhole get steeper as the bust got larger? One reason I want to make my own clothes is because off the rack shirts have shoulder seams too far down the arm, and bunch weirdly at the underarms beside the bust. I opted for huge oversized sweaters last winter because the ones that fit otherwise had those weird folds on either side of the bust. Would a steeper armscye fix that? problem?

After tracing out the pieces, how would you expand them? I'm thinking of tracing pattern pieces from a dress I have, but expand them out several inches so I can recreate it to fit me.
