but i know to draw the line when it comes to the people.
its okay in a story, but never drag it into real life where it harms people.

can’t believe dan and phil weren’t brought up in this video, id argue their shippers were/are just as bad as larries and it 100% played a part in dan not wanting to come out

i used to ship two guys in a certain band that HEAVILY leaned on the narrative that they were together in what i think was a way to tease the fans, they even kissed briefly during a concert and you just know the community went insane. those guys kinda made that whole thing into a part of their onstage characters and even though i've disavowed rpf (i personally think it's invasive and uncomfortable), i can't deny that they were very silly with it

Reylo in extend Daiver (Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver) is so toxic because there are LEGIT Reylo "fans" who harassed Adam Driver's family and force him to date Daisy Ridley instead. What made me physically ill is that Disney IGNORED this issue, and decided to blame the fans for the failure of "sequel trilogy" such as being racist or sexist. 😡

This is why I abandoned Star Wars not long after episode 9. And considering what happened now, I hope Kathleen Kennedy get fired and blacklisted from the industry for not just spitting George Lucas' legacy but for purposely making so much decisions that only sinking the company down.

I've always said: Shipping two fictional characters is fine (within reason of course, LEGAL reason 😐 and this is not even touching on the people who are aggressive STANs/harass and bully types which is problematic for a different reason). SoapGhost? Sure, whatever. Any of the Avengers shipped with one another? Sure. Do lil drawings and fanfic or whatever. They are fictional, unalive characters, and will never be affected by shipping. But when you begin to go outside of the fiction and applying shipping to living breathing folks? That's a problem.

Thankfully I'm normal. I just ship fictional characters who are related to each other.

Well, two years later and crazy fans pushed Kit Connor out of the closet. I mean, bullied him to talk about his personal life, because he said multiple times he was comfortable with his sexuality and his life, it was just NONE OF OUR BUSINESS.
Now imagine being that crazy about "supporting" their ships or being a hero for protecting their idols and end up being THE PROBLEM ITSELF... I love shipping, I think it's cute, sometimes it's hot, but the moment they cross the line and destroy real lives I just can't. That's why I don't engage in any of those groups online anymore, I just don't want to be a part of it when they actually manage to destroy my next favorite person's life.

shipping originally wasn't even about hoping two people/characters end up together. in fiction, people used to ship characters from completely different franchises, like shipping was originally just another fun way to interact with the media

A really memorable moment for me was this interesting Joergen Klopp video (i have no clue who he is, just a random clip that showed up on my homepage) where he had a little joke-y flirty moment with his like interviewer or something, and the comment section was filled with people who were just SO READY to start shipping them. I was in there like 'haha guys if you really wanted to ship them, why not just make up your own OCs instead of using real people?" and the response was 'it's just not the same.'

Note that this RPF had no 'management keeping them apart narrative' nor were they really actually in a relationship in any possible way. They're strangers/ Their personalities don't really feature bc it's only one small clip of them. There's not really any major benefit to making them the main characters of a ship instead of just making original characters, as there's not much time spent with their personalities nor any antiestablishment conspiracy narrative seed interest in them specifically getting together. At most, this would be a meet-cute set-up for a story. They could do an 'inspired by' story of a sports dude and his interviewer, and the amount of 'making up original characterization' would be about the same, since it's not like they know the random interviewer guy or Joergen enough to write them.

Still, something about the 'real people' aspect, that there's video proof of this happening in real life, really made people obsessed with specifically those two being the characters they'd want to imagine. Like a 10 sec clip is enough to get invested, basically. That's why I'm not really sure that you can prevent RPF. As long as there are shippable moments on camera, and we keep the trend of celebrities being unable to control their image because they 'belong' to the public, then there'll be people who'll think the ship supercedes the people. I think first we'd have to better define the boundaries of a parasocial relationship and push back on celebrity culture with paparazzis? Notice that the time of these two bands being shipped were the beginning of celebrities being personal on the internet, where it was still new and exciting and nobody had heard of parasocial relationships, yet. I think maybe with time, this culture of shipping will get more and more pushback and caution.

Another thing. Not all RPF-ers do it bc they think it's real. It's this weird dissonance where people are conscious that they're not actually writing the people, they're basically writing about the public personas, and therefore it's fairgame because the public personas are manufactured. But at the same time, they'd rather write about the real people over making up their own OCs. Again, parasocial culture would need to be pushed back against, but also it's the community investment aspect. It's easier to rally people to read your content/find people who like the same dynamic when you all can rally over hockey player feels (apparently they're a huge RPF fandom) or Wang Yibo x Xiao Zhan, but promoting two original characters is a lot harder, even if they have the same vibes bc there's no prior investment. So why not create the prior investment?

Like create a new space where people encourage writing 'inspired by' works instead of RPF? Like a wattpad where people can find and pool their RPF feelings with comics/books/fics that fill the same niche? I think if the main part of shipping is community and an interest in a certain relationship dynamic, then I think with enough incentive (with their own community, ease of access, and precedent), it shouldn't be too hard to get people to be fine with a thinly veiled repaint of the real people. If the insane 50 Shades and Twilight community were fine with Edward and Bella being swapped out with Christian and Anna, why not get the BTS shippers to create their own boyband Goncharov-style? And then all the RPF repaint couples can have their clever little fake names. Like the Loius x Harry repaint would have a guy named Larry and a guy named Stiles, that way the people who want to ship them can have their little conspiracy community aspect (haha, we're shipping harry and louis but nobody will know bc we're swapping out the names and details) without actually interfering with the real people.

So mabey a ship nobody remebers but when i was around 14/15 year old i shipped Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato really hard ( back when there were best friends). And there was a thread on the Internet, i think it was something like "the L something" where people commented on their "relationship" ( like all the prove for them beeing togehter ) but also all their whereabouts. Like you could go on this page an literally see people commenting in real life time where these two were, what they were doing, who they spend the day with and if a new "proof" appeared that they are indeed a couple. At first, back then, i was really into this, i spend hours chatting with those people, always looking up what my favourite couple was doing, going back all of those ten of thousand of pages to get all the information. After a while i kind of realised that this was just full on stalking, i mean like there were pictures of them, together or seperatly everyday, dont know who took them but yeah, to think back, it was really creepy. I think and hope this Website doesnt exist anymore. I cant even understand today how i could be so obssed with this.

This is such a weird thing to me. I live in a country where gay couples have only recently been "socially allowed" to walk with their hands held, and that's only on big cities, country mouses like me can't be like that in public places. Here, you still have cases of young boys, children, being beaten up til death cuz their father tought he was acting too "faggy" and wanted to beat the gay out of him. I cannot imagine a scenario where I would safely speaculate publicaly and intensivaly about someone's sexuality.

I'm an NCT fan and idk if you know nct but it has one of the largest number of ships on earth like at some point every two members are shipped together regardless of the age or whatever , and the company isn't helping either , i feel like every ship of nct had it's peak time , which makes me feel sometimes that it's planned by the company ,two members will be interacting way too much in a certain era then on another they'll suddenly start to avoid and ignore each other or there won't be as much interactions and guess what is the fans interpretation of it ?! that tHeY fAuGhT bEhInD tHe ScEnEs , the urge to explain and detect every single move of a member nah it reaches a point where they start to hate on another member who supposedly (for them) is ruining the relationship between the two shipped members like if i remember right there was a time when people were hating on Jimin (i think) because they said he's sliding between Jungkook and Taehyung too much like - - -
as someone who was envolved in this world i can tell you how manipulative it is you start to watch few cute meoments of the members then end up watching actual analysis of their small human moves , and the scary part of it is that you don't realize it until you're actually sinking and it doesn't even take much to convince you that these two are SO TRUE . . .
