‘Awuya’ celebrates the outstanding achievements of Prof. Keith Vickerman in the study of ‘trypanosomes’, the sleeping sickness in humans. The work provides a bridge between the creativity of the worlds of art and science.
Inspired by African drumming rhythms, a pentatonic harp and the tune of a lullaby of a central African tribe, Beamish wrote a challenging and unique work for the harp. ‘Awuya’ is the name of a little girl to which her mother sung the lullaby in hope to make her sleep, while worrying that she might have the disease.
In 2005 Beamish modified the work into a shorter version, which is now generally preferred over the original version by most harpists.
