Does this take days… weeks? I got cleared to walk 5 days ago. I’m 2 sessions into physical therapy but have been doing these hyperextension stretch since surgery on the 28th. I can get to 0 degrees but nothing past, no hyperextension… Will I ever get it back at this point?

Hello sir, I'm a physiotherapist... currently I'm seeing a patient who has undergone peroneus longus tendon graft ACL reconstruction surgery around 2 months back...my patient has complain of quadriceps weakness before surgery also... I'm working a lot on getting her quads strength back & full extension of knee...but last 5-7° of extension is lacking...is this going to be helpful for her!!??
Please help or give me some suggestions.

I hope sone is still monitoring this page. I had a knee injury and now have arthritis on one side of my knee. My patella is intacked and the dic says I do not need surgery but therapy. I have about a 5% deficit and cannot straighten my leg. It hurts and I just cannot. It is keeping me from being able to walk normally so I cannot exercise.
My knee does not hurt when I bend it.
Will this work for me?

Sir I had a right knee injury last month while walking down the steps. My knee swelling has reduced considerably after regular medicines. Almost no pain. Not taking any painkillers now. But I was unable to walk without a walker. Since last week i have been doing knee straightening exercises as suggested by my Physiotherapist. Lying on the back & contracting the leg with a roller below my ankle, then doing the same exercise in sitting position by placing my feet on a small stool in an incline position. Now I am able to walk some feet without any walker or support, but with a limp. The bend of right knee looks almost similar to the unaffected left knee.. How time it would take to come to normal.

I'm in PT 3 times a week, and in the last 4 weeks I'm made it from 5-4 degrees extension down to 2-1 degrees extension. Do you think there's still hope for me to get back down to 0 if I keep doing these??

Wow I believe there was a slight difference after first try. Not sure if it’s mind over matter, I felt sore after the 15 mins. I used a 5 pound weight. 12 years ago I had a tibial plateau fracture and was unable to extend my leg as far back as the unaffected leg. This caused hip stiffness and gait instability.

My 16 year old daughter had acl and meniscus surgery She is a toe walker and the pt said it will be harder for her to get full extension because of that. It has been 6 months and she has 97% entension., The doctor says keep working on it and he has seen the majority of people get to full extension, if she was off by 15% then he would worry. I am of course worried. Do you think she is in trouble or have you seen people get to 100 after six months?

Hi Mike/Lenny,

I am currently 2 weeks and 3 days post-op from ACL reconstruction. I've read from multiple sports med articles and time frame guidelines regarding ACL reconstruction rehab that if full/symmetrical extension of the surgically operated knee is not reached in a time window of 2-4 weeks post-op, the success rate of the surgery long term and achieving full ROM is significantly decreased. Just wondering what your thoughts were in your experience/practice regarding this time frame of achieving full or symmetrical extension in relation to success rates and return to activities, and is it possible to achieve full extension still past that window without further surgical procedures...

I have gone through ACL reconstruction on my left knee 3 months back and since then I am visiting physio once a day except for Saturday and Sunday but till now I haven't achieved full extension. My physio is telling, I have 5 degrees of lag and tight IT band. I don't get time to exercise other than my physiotherapy at all. I have tried this exercise but it's getting very painful after 5 minutes. Could please suggest what to do?

I find that it helps my patients relax if you can block the femur from externally rotating while in supine. With the prone hang there is less fight by the internal rotators to resist the femurs natural external rotation "foot falling to side while laying in bed". For those with tight posterior capsule without hamstring involvement, I find that prone hang with hamstring play and/or vibration to the insertion of the hamstrings will allow for the relaxation and capsular stretch. 15 minutes 4x a day is rough for either one even for me though. Thanks for your point of view :-)

I had a patellar tendon rupture repair surgery about 6 months ago. Dr harvested some hamstring and put like strings crisscross the patella. Now I have been following the physio's exercises and done all she gave me to do as best I could. But one thing is still an issue is to do an extension of the knee, or is that hyper extension. The joint extends fine but when I sit on the bed or floor and do leg lifts, the knee still bends down a bit and no matter how hard I pull the quad muscles it doesnt want to pull all the way up like the other knee. What other exercises can help with this. Bending or flexion is fine about 110+ degrees and walking normally but going down stairs still a bit of an issues because I have no control over the first few degrees when I have to bend that knee under full body weigh. Any advice will be appreciated !
