“The fuck’s his name?” Love the subtlety of how that line was delivered. It demonstrates the pecking order of who’s who in that room.

What I always wonder is what Jared's role\'position is in this movie. EVP? COO?

I’m just thinking how they all had to come in at 2AM, and they got ready in fully pressed suits and are perfectly groomed. I would have stumbled in, in my pajamas and 1 slipper if they called me to come in that late

Jared's exchanges with Sam are precise, Jared respects him but asserts his authority because he knows that the situation is really bad and he is responsible to make sure that "nothing bad happens".
Most people lack the coldness and cynicism that Jared wields.

I've seen this scene probably ten times in the last few years. Always wondered what Mr. Blonde said to Jeremy Irons when he called him. Time it sometime: it's only 18 seconds ! The conversation must have went: "Hello?" "This is Mr. Blonde. We have a situation I can't talk about over the phone. It's big." "I'll be there in thirty minutes." <click>

Part of what makes the movie special is the gradual, relatable escalation. Until big-boss-only decision-making. Risk management may have failed but I wish all large corporations were as agile as this bank.

"So it would appear we have a problem." - It's like Robertson has repeatedly warned Cohen about where their trading model has taken them and he just shrugs it off, "Oh, thank you for that." --- completely irresponsible trade behavior and management...but underneath it all, I'd wager that the lot of them, save for Peter, Seth and the recently fired Eric Dale actually understand the model...therefore had no problem dismissing it these last 36 to 40 months. Like a poisoned reactor core, it just built up and was ready to explode.

When Jared tells Sam he understands - he knows what’s coming, and that the way forward would be to transform the firm into a Bank Holding company, or merge it with another finance company specialising in alternative lines of business (probably the former). Sam was going to be kept on for 2 more years probably to cleanse the books of all the toxic assets, as well as unwinding positions linked to mortgages, unwinding the swaps, etc. they’d also need his industry contacts and experience to place any banking and product distribution activities under a new legal entity, or have a new parent company like Berkshire Hathaway buy it, once they’d cleaned out the dirty laundry.

Whether it's gangster with guns or gangsters with suit, it's all about the same Thing ! MONIE !
They might speak differently and wear different clothes, but only one thing matters.
At the end of the day when you fuck up in any of those world, they get rid of you. Well, in the "corporate" world they don't kill you, but it's really close to it when you think about it, isn' it ?
On both sides no scrupules and no sentiment, which is well portrayed when the young analyst cries in the restroom and sees absolutely no compassion whatsoever from Jared.
Those guys should be put in jail but in this world they are rewarded. Funny stuff !

I've seen this a few times. It took me a minute, but we have to appreciate how smart Jared is. The film tries to tell us without telling us, showing clues about his knowledge and computation abilities subtle. The entire room gets a packet with the data showing the problem, while they all do NOT get the packets at the same time. Jared, gets through the entire thing, quickly and understands the problem. The legal guy at the end tries to say the he understands the issues and says "these V.R.A numbers are setting this thing off", Jared already digested that point and moved on in his mind. He's several moves ahead of that by that time. And makes a decision the company needs. But to be sure calls someone even smarter, Tulda.

A REAL gem of a Film, with great actors and with EXCELLENT direction from and directed by J. C. Chandor in his feature directorial debut.
The 2007-8 CRISI was caused by such a number of firms as likes of NORTHERN ROCK this created a knock out effect on nearly ALL industries from Agriculture through to construction and later Marketing.
