One thing that's interesting is that at first Jack Nicholson's performance seems a bit unintentionally funny, what with his continually creepy expression and his somewhat jokey remarks. But then he starts swinging the axe, and then it hits you: this is a man who's completely lost it, and there is a serious possibility of him killing his wife right now, making her terror all the more horrifying. I personally prefer the more unsettling paranormal elements of the Overlook, like the girls and the bartender, and the subtler elements, such as when Danny asks Hallorann about Room 237 and the "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" scene, but this is still pretty effective horror.
