you need to test this on a problem engine --- not on a good engine .... so that you can receive and detect problem codes on the scanner ....

Actually, on some vehicles it does matter whether the vehicle is turned off or not when you plug anything into the obd port. I've seen vehicles fry the second a device was plugged in, because the vehicle was running.
THERES A REASON THEY TELL YOU TO MAKE SURE YOU TURN THE VEHICLE OFF WHENEVER PLUGGING INTO OR UNPLUGGING ANY DEVICE INTO OBD2 PORT.
