I have a challenge in dealing with angry people because I can't stand an angry person. I wanted to add something, the non-verbal expressions and tone of your voice can ruin everything because they can be totally opposite of what you are communicating.

By saying "I am not sure but I can find out" you are committing to an action, that you might not have time/experience, or resources to deliver. Some questions cannot be answered (because it's not within your area or expertise) and by saying "no" you save other people time. You can definitely direct the person to the right department to soften it up (IT in this case) but that's all

why beating around the bush?

When I was in the job interview for my current job in an American company and a question came through that I missed, I said: "Sorry, I didn't quite get what you asked". The guy then proceeded to really nicely and kindly paraphrase the question so I could understand better. And I got the job!

I wonder how relevant the formal British English manners are in an international environment? Many international companies have large amounts of international employees and they all have different manners in communication and behavior. In my jobs this never mattered. I actually prefer people to tell me that they don't know instead of beating around the bush by telling me they will look into it and then having to wonder if they really mean it or just want to be "polite". I don't think it is polite to give people the impression they can count on you, when in fact you can't.

Naaaah, first thing first : Understand the environment where you are, then understand the ppl around you and how they speak. Once done, adapt yourself to be in line with the "house rules".

If someone asks you a question and you don't know the answer. Here the two answers "I don't know" and "let me come back to you on that" are not totally the same. it's not only a question of one being more polite than the other. In the second answer you are promising/committing yourself to helping the one asking. So, he or she may go back to you and ask the same question. In the first one you are not promising anything.

Sory, but the 2 pm example is a total bulsh*t. "I will try" is good enough expression in any language! I do not have to commit to something I do not know could be done by the given time. In the same time I could not say no, that is why you are softly saying NO, by saying " I will try"

...as long as you say "with all due respect" first.. Your can say anything your want. If they're liberal.. Just say "i feel" first... Then fire away.

The last situation is odd, In my home country we say ”What?”, but when I learnt English I was told that if we do not understand anything we should say ”Sorry?”

The first example is redicules. I had so many problems , not in the UK, but elsewhere, when this happens. It causes more harm that good. Instead of leave me to solve the problem they send me to someone else clueless person, to drain me out from time end resources .Not to mention I suffer still after intervention in hospital. Something was wrong, but they say it's ok. But 3 years later it is not. I don't care how unprofessional you are, just be correct and don't lie!!!
