ОтветитьRomans or Caeser specifically did not so much "conquer" which Julius Caeser in fact did to Rome not Gaul but instead brought "Law" to what for the time would be seen as a true wealth of Land and People...and hence why Julius Caeser who fought only one rather minor Battle in Gaul though gaining Triumph then ahem "returned to Rome" ("Crossing the Rubicon") with apparently a MASSIVE Army.
Ancient Latin Republican Rome which was very powerful at the time order Caeser to put down his "weapons" (Army) before entering upon Northern then later Capital Rome itself to which Caeser famously replied "the die is cast" which has had any number of meanings ever since as it let to the spectacular collapse of Republican Rome and Caeser himself personally but then the rise of Imperial or "Omnipotent Rome" which one could argue became very much suddenly inhabited by these "Giant Men" or "Gauls." How this be differentiated from Germanic or Hunnic i have no clue but Ancient Roman very much defined by size of sword, large indeed huge in number en marche and a very powerful equestrian class which later found its way into Spain then Arabia.
"The Gauls" were not noted for being Horsemen but "Imperial Walkers" more like with many Alpha male type characteristics and traits in particular "given to wandering" or "wanderlust" in the Ancient German. They probably attracted Julius Caeser by being something "proto Roman" both terrifying and civilizing both at the same time...but as noted here and in the History of Gaul even Caeser forced to remark tremendous difference...upon noting this tho too late to save the Roman Republic and Caeser himself. "The Eternal City" be a place of Eternal Convulsion ever since..

That's actually the best map of early Britton I've seen yet I've seen lots of terrible ones that just have all of England as Saxon like the takeover was instantaneous or sporadic when in fact these two sides were duking it out for hundreds of years before the Normans came in and conquered them both.

ОтветитьAren't most French and Belgian people today descendants of the Gauls?
ОтветитьI wonder how they developed the beautiful french Language.
